Thanks gents. I had a Dewey and liked it a lot...I'd get another one without hurting my feelings.

I'll wade into the two areas of controversy you both touched on. For boresnakes, I LOVE them for my pistols. Really wouldn't use anything else unless I'm in the "mood" to give my babies the deep clean. However, I won't touch my AR with those. I've had two friends with .223 and .22lr barrels get the appropriate sized boresnake completely lodged in their barrels and we had to use a leverage system to get them out and I"m not sure if it screwed up the barrel end or rifling, but it scared me away from them on that sized barrel. I still use it with a smile on my .40 calibers though.

My buddy also has a bore guide, which I admit is pretty slick because of how it manages the sludge that comes out. He swears up and down that one should never ever clean an AR without one for fear of damaging the bore, which I can certainly respect. That said, the platform has been around for a long time, but the bore guide is a relatively new invention and I don't recall hearing/seeing evidence of screwed up barrels because we never used to use bore guides. So...what is the necessity of those things?

Thanks again for the assist -- I knew better than to go to Wal-Mart and I was pretty sure Fleet Farm near me wouldn't have them either. I've been looking for a reason to go to Frontiersman and to Gunstop. Now I have one. I will blame (thank) you both if I end up with another firearm today because I went there while weak.

Use of a bore scope will change your mind about the bore snake. They are ok for a quick knocking out of major debris at the range, but they do not really remove much carbon at all much less copper. If you only ever use the snake to clean, your barrel is getting a lot of crap built up in it.

OP: Gunstop has an assortment of one-piece rods in stock including Dewey coated rods and Tipton Carbon fiber rods. I prefer carbon fiber but either will work fine. Make sure you get a good bore guide to use with it. For an AR, the milled Delrin ones are cheap and tough to beat. JP makes a really nice one out of milled aluminum that is probably the most over-built piece of cleaning gear on the planet. Stay away from the adjustable models unless you can't find anything else.

Good luck,
Can very easily do snow camo with either stencils or "hand drawn" with the airbrush. Just depends how crazy you want to go with it. I'll be doing an AK based rifle in a winter camo scheme in the next month or two.
Just so others know; that's Cerakote and not a Rit-Dye job on your 10/22. With the dye, you can only go darker. Not sure what Paul is upto with the bleach but it doesn't sound like it'll end well.

I have never used the cera-hide stuff, but it sounds very similar to cerakote except maybe mixed with a dry film lubricant.

Cerakote is much more durable than duracoat. Especially on polymer.

Especially the second page post by dleong with the link to the Minnesota Administrative Rules for loaded ammunition. The prior post by bensdad pertains to limitations for primers and propellants.

The short story is that there is essentially no MN state limit on properly storing loaded ammunition in the home. Up to 20 pounds of smokeless powder and up to 10,000 primers are allowed. Powder and primers in loaded ammuntion are not included in those guidelines.

With that said, there may be a limit imposed by local fire ordinance, however. That varies by municipality. Check your local library for fire regulations to avoid alarming uninformed public servants/officials with such questions.

Here is a link to a SAAMI (Small Arms Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) pamphlet on the subject:

http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/publications/download/saami_item_202-sporting_ammunition.pdf

Word.

Or if I am reading the link correctly 50 lbs of smokeless power if it is in a wooden box or cabinet with 1 inch thick walls.

The switch on it went out while shooting it (after around 300 rounds w/ light) and I had to send it in for warranty repair. The greater the recoil forces, the higher the probability that it will go out on you. Shotguns are notorious for killing handheld lights.
Most decent handheld lights should work on an AR-15, but if you are planning on using the rifle for defensive purposes you may want to consider upgrading to an actual weapon light at some point. Murphy's law and all.

I recently picked up a new Kahr MK40 from Thunderjohn. It's really small and can be hidden very easily. While small, it is heavy since it's all steel.

Heavy is relative, it weighs about the same as my steel J frame .357 that I carry in my pocket. I had it up on my hunting land last weekend and fired 200 rounds of various .40 ammo. FMJ, JHP and 165 and 180 grain bullets. It fed and fired every one without a hitch. Very accurate too. You can only get two fingers on the grip because it's so small but it was still easy to shoot.

This may become my new EDC. I've already added some checkered wood grips that make it easier to hang on to and replaced the plastic guide rod with a steel one from Wolff gunsprings.

It jumps a bit when fired but very manageable compared to magnum revolvers. The trigger is unique to Kahr. Long pull and you don't know when it will fire, no stacking at all. Similar to a very smooth DA revolver. I really like this gun.

That's really sad to hear how far they've fallen. A few years back Bulls Eye in Lk Elmo was a pretty nice place; a fair bit of reloading stuff, an interesting selection of new and used guns, and the prerequisite 'bar stools' at the counter, and a dog bed-usually with dog on the sales floor. I attended several free seminars there; intro to reloading, long range shooting/ ballistics. I believe just before the name change, and subsequent relocation, one of the 2 partners left. I was in the old shop just once since then. Spent as much as I could, but as they were out of stock on much of what I wanted, I went home and spent an almost equal amount at Midway. I keep hoping they make it, as there aren't any gun shops anywhere near that close to me...

it can split logs, but the point is to split them so you can set them on fire LATER - not at the same time as splitting them

I can't speak for the 44mag stuff, but Gunstop did have a variety of Buffalo Bore in 10mm a couple of weeks ago. It wouldn't hurt to call and ask.
