I recently picked up a new Kahr MK40 from Thunderjohn. It's really small and can be hidden very easily. While small, it is heavy since it's all steel.

Heavy is relative, it weighs about the same as my steel J frame .357 that I carry in my pocket. I had it up on my hunting land last weekend and fired 200 rounds of various .40 ammo. FMJ, JHP and 165 and 180 grain bullets. It fed and fired every one without a hitch. Very accurate too. You can only get two fingers on the grip because it's so small but it was still easy to shoot.

This may become my new EDC. I've already added some checkered wood grips that make it easier to hang on to and replaced the plastic guide rod with a steel one from Wolff gunsprings.

It jumps a bit when fired but very manageable compared to magnum revolvers. The trigger is unique to Kahr. Long pull and you don't know when it will fire, no stacking at all. Similar to a very smooth DA revolver. I really like this gun.

Hey guys,

Looking for ideas on secure storage in my house. I have a small Stack On safe from Gander, but I outgrew that long ago. Tired of putting locks on guns and leaning them against the wall in the closet. Don't have the funds at the moment for a 48-64 gun safe (although that is in the future plans). So wondering about cheaper alternatives for the time being. Want something lockable, but other than that pretty open. I was thinking of something like a locker they have at some gyms. With the open mesh steel construction that you can see through, but its pretty heavy gauge steel so it would take some serious effort to cut through, and impossible for kids to get into. I am not too worried about theft. I have a home security system, close neighbors, regular police patrols, a bright street light in me front yard, and I am armed to the teeth if I were here. Not overly worried about fire either as I am heavily insured (which also minimizes the theft worry). My primary objective here is lockable storage that I can use to store ammo, primer, powders, and of course guns.

Backstory: I found a decent deal on 1k rounds of 5.56 so I placed order and when it was delivered, I wasn't home, my neighbor saw the box and was going to put inside their home until I came over to get it (we do that for each other for safety, have had a few things stolen when someone wasn't home and delivery left on doorstep). They saw the box print, picked it up and then set it back as they where not comfortable touching ammo (to each their own). When he saw me the next day, he asked what I was doing with "so much ammo". I replied I target and competition shoot, and 1k rounds is not that much ammo, 2-4 range trips or competitions will eat that in a hurry. He then replies "1K!?! your stockpiling ammo, that's illegal!" I replied, no, it's not, I've never seen a state or federal statute that limits the number of rounds you can have on hand. My question after searching the net and finding vague information (some say it is, others say it isn't, and can't seem to find a definite answer in Federal laws, there's a bit about "explosive powder storage", but nothing about loaded ammo), is whether or not there is a law either in Minnesota, or U.S. overall, on the number of rounds you can stock.

So here is where I need some help...If this was your gun and lets say you had a budget of $800 give or take a few dollars...What would you purchase to get the most for your money...Like I stated I am not real savvy when it comes to AR's and would greatly appreciate what everyone here would do..

So if you wouldn't mind build me your AR with a $800 budget...I would love to see an item detail of what you would buy piece by piece...Then what I am thinking is taking all that info that I get from all the great people here and some up with a gun that those of you said you would make...I would take info from each of you and put 1 or maybe even 2 guns together over a short period of time..

If there are any AR pistol experts I would really love to see what you guys would put together as well...

Ok I know that I can spend hours researching but I would love to see the knowledge that I know a crap load of people on here have..and then pick that info apart to make up a sweet toy...If I get info on both pistols and rifle I know for sure within the next 6 months I will build both...But for know I have to stick to just 1 and them a couple months after the first project is done I will start on the 2nd project..

I just want to thanks those that feed me there knowledge a special thankyou in advance...I really appreciate everything that I have learned from this site..
Thanks and I look forward to reading all the info you hopefully will share with me......
I am new to the forum and relatively new to minnesota. I recently acquired my first handgun, but I have shot and been around them for the most part of my life.
Hello! I'm a new member here--I know: ugh--but I don't suck. Mostly. I'm "happy" to say that I broke etiquette with my first post by posting this message in the general gun talk forum. Thankfully no one gave me crap, I deleted it and reposted here.

I've actually been a reader of the sight for several months since I began getting back into shooting and I love the information and most of the members, especially the grumpy ones. Those are my people, right there.

I have three firearms currently: A Beretta 96FS(I"m actually not certain which model this is--it is a .40 cal, which means a 96, but it has the rail, which I thought the FS did not have) INOX, Glock 23 Gen 4, and a Rock River Arms AR-15 with lots of extra mags and an Eotech 817 sitting in front of a G23 3x magnifier--zeroed in at 25 and 300 yards for right now.

I'm a member at Bills and I like the range guys there, plus its literally blocks away from my home, which makes it very convenient; although, the range is a shortie, which limits my longer range shooting possibilities. Are there other Bill's users here that get together and shoot occasionally? That type of thing might be interesting. I'd also love to go shoot outdoors and have looked into various places to do that--the few remaining, that is.

Hopefully this newb post is better than the typical stupid ones that many complain about. I intend to post much more frequently, especially as I begin to modify my AR-15 and seek out a new shotgun, a 1911 (or five) and come up with other random crap to talk about.

Would this then be an appropriate time to organize another CZ Shoot to afford Mr. Bergquist a final opportunity to spend quality range time with his fellow Minnesotan CZ addicts, and for us to send him off in grand fashion? I think so!
Oh, what's that you say? It's a 2011 case instead of a 1911 case?? Balderdash!! I CLEARLY remember that young John Browning coming out with his 45 caliber pistol design like it was just yesterday!! I even remember seeing some cases with this headstamp on them, and they were nice and new and shiny just like this one!!

At any rate, it makes a nice souvenir, and obviously some ammo manufacturers missed the boat by not selling 1911 Centennial cases last year. Oooops! Too late now!!

Plenty of 40 and 45, but no 9. Went to wallmart and it was the same story. Not a single box of 9mm. I will correct myself and say that ff had 2 boxes of steel cased wolf ammo, but that would defeat the purpose of the purchase. What gives? Do I have to wait till after the elections to buy? I love the LC9's long trigger pull and external safety and feel that it is a very safe carry gun. Yesterday though, my LC9 broke its firing pin and is currently on the way back to Ruger for a new one and a once over.

I have a full sized XD9 that I would like to carry, but with just a grip safety and a very short trigger pull, it is quite different than what I am used too. I am lookin for some tips on how to safely carry a striker fired pistol other than the typical keep your finger outside the trigger guard and look when you reholster to make sure there are no obstructions that may cause a neglegant discharge.

I started working on computers in the late 1970s at a young age and now almost 4 decades later, I work in IT Security and have several industry-related certifications with the field. For a further perspective, Windows didn't exist until 7 years after I started; and Macintosh computers came along 6 years after I started, so I've been around the block a few times with these beasts of frustration for people. I have a day job that pays the bills, but I'm also a one-man IT shop which provides customized and personalized services to a smaller customer base. I'm looking to expand my client base a bit. It doesn't matter if you need my services on-time, a few times, or you want me to maintain your systems on an on-going basis, whatever works for you, I can handle in an efficent and effective manner that saves both time and money.

I do the usual Windows support but am also well-verses and experienced with Linux as well. In fact, I run Linux on all my computers at home for a variety of reasons, so it's not like I just dabble in it.

I'm not looking to be the biggest, just the best. If you're interested, contact me via the board for my information. I do more than the list below, so if you see something you have a need for and it's not there, just ask me.

- Windows Maintenance (mitigating risk for viral infections, cleanup and optimization of the system for performance)
- Computer and Network Setup, Security and Performance Optimization (for wired and/or wireless networks)
- Online Safety Training
- Data Recovery and Data Migration from older computers to new
- Server Setup, Security and Performance Optimization (Windows and/or Linux)
- Remote Support (for most tasks) or on-site if needed
- Data Backup and Recovery Implementation
- Installation and Configuration of various software programs
- Hardware and Software Upgrades

I know for the old hats on here, this isn't a new place or probably even news; but while I'm not new to guns, I'm new to the local ranges, so here's my experience and viewpoint on the Burnsville Pistol Range (BPR).

The Pros:

1) The staff is professional, nice, and has zero-tolerance for unsafe behavior / b.s. from what I've seen. That's the way it should be everywhere.

2) It's only a gun range. Period. BPR is NOT a gun shop PLUS a range, which is great for those of us who just want to shoot and not shop. Adding to that, while there is a need for a gun shop plus range for trying and buying weapons; there's also room for range-only businesses to survive and thrive. When I shop for guns, I go to Bill's Gun Shop and Range in Robbinsdale, but when I go to shoot, I go to BPR.

3) Related to 2 above, BPR does not rent firearms. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY (did I mention how much I REALLY) like that. Why do I like it so much? Well, I like it because you don't (usually) get people at BPR who fall into the "Hey let's go rent-a-gun and blow some sh*t up!!" crowd. If there is something like that which happens there, it's often due to an untrained / unaware gun owner or a companion of an untrained / unaware gun owner.

I know that no range or gun shop/range could survive if only trained shooters could go there, but I think at least in theory, that it'd be a great idea if all of the range-only places got together and developed a training class with certification that you had to complete before you could shoot at one of the participating ranges. It would not guarantee safety, but it would help promote it and help eliminate the whiz-bang-shoot'em-up-rent-a-gun crowd from the range-only places. The various ranges could handle everything, it would need to have the guv'ment involved at the city, county or state level.

I did catch someone loading a gun behind the firing line (he felt into the "an untrained / unaware gun owner" and I nicely explained that he needed to help the gun at the firing line pointed down-range while he loads on he table behind the firing line because no one felt like getting shot today. I only had to mention it once (and I'm surprised Roger or Sue didn't notice), but everything was cool about it. He saw I was firing my 22 and his didn't like the ammo, so he gave me a box of 50 rounds. In turn, I let him fire both my weapons.

4) In general, I like the overall vibe of the place. The prices are reasonable, the staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.

5) I took some training with them and it was full of valuable information and non-fluff. At the end of the 2-day class, no one really had any questions. They really covered it pretty well with a very developed training program for the course I took. I would recommend their training classes and range to anyone, and I do.

6) I like their target holders, big metal V clamps vs just some alligator clips like I've seen at other ranges.

7) They don't charge you for the cardboard you have behind your cardboard like another range I went to does. BPR also supplies masking tape for the targets and they will sweep up the brass, while some other ranges you do that yourself. I don't know how the vast majority of ranges are because I've only been to a few, so I don't know what's normal and what isn't as far as those things go.

8) The memberships are very reasonably priced and well worth it.

The Cons:

1) It's nice that they have a rifle bay, but it costs them more money to run it due to damages, repairs and taxes, than it does to have it. It doesn't break-even, let alone profit for them. Hunters need a place to sight their rifles, true that, but they would have been better off adding more pistol range space.

2) I wish they had longer hours on Sunday, but that's not a big deal, it''s just that weekends are usually my only times to shoot.

3) They don't have an outdoor range. I'm sure it's because of being inside the city limits or some other laws, which I understand.

That leaves the difficult choice of scantily clad waitresses on the one hand and the reality of skanky $1.00 carboard pizzas selling for $8 on the other hand. The Gopher, while the most EFFEN gun friendly bar in the TC Metro, has no outside smoking area or patio.

As an alternative, just down West 7th Street a block and a half past The Xcel Energy Center is Burger Moe's, which has all kinds of good burgers plus a full menu of appetizers, and a very nice patio area outside.
First impressions are really good. It ate everything i put into it. Tula, Herters brass, Zombie-max, and some hand loads. The recoil wasnt as bad as i was expecting seeing how small it is. Left a small brusie between my thumb and pointer finger.

I had read reviews that said these come with rough edges and bad machining on the slide, ramp, and barrel. I didnt see or experience anything to support those claims. It functioned very well and smoothly. The double action trigger pull was long and gracefully smooth.

All the Taurus naysayers should reconsider some of these new Made in USA pistols. I am super happy with my purchase. I have seen these little six rounders go for $199-$230 depending on the accessories. Mine came with a nice bulldog belt holster case (looks like a cellphone case) and two six round magazines.
Anyone else just love this gun?

dealers, internet armchair lawyers etc... whoever wants to chime in really - i have a question about a long and detailed conversation i got into tonight over beers that left everyone stumped.

completely hypothetical scenario: if you had a gun for sale, and a resident of another state says they want to buy it. you say: would have to be transferred through a dealer to be on the up and up. potential buyer says: my son is a resident of the state in which you reside even though i am not. i'll give you his number, just sell it to him. deal is set up and transaction is made.

question 1: have you as a resident done anything wrong? after all, you sold to a legal buyer. however, you realize that there is a possibility that son is more than likely going to just give it to dad.

question 2: does your inkling of something fishy about to take place put you at risk of anything? after all, son may actually be the person who owns this for their lifetime. you do not have any way to confirm or deny that anyone else may ever own this firearm or what they intend to do with it. after all - again - you sold to a legally viable buyer according to the laws in the state in which you reside.

question 3: IF son then turned around and gave gun to dad in a different state - as family members - has son done anything wrong ?

question 4: IF anything illegal HAS taken place by son giving said gun to dad - how would that be any different than a LEGAL buyer using the gun you sold them to commit an armed robbery? you had no idea they intended to do harm with said gun any more than a licensed FFL who did a NICS check would have - so, can yo be put in any trouble for the actions of another later?

brought up some really good discussion. thought i'd share the love

Hi,

I've got a pair of brand new Samsung (now Seagate) SATA 2 hard drives I purchased for a project last year that I never go around to using and figured someone here might be able to use them.

These are the HD155UI model (1.5 TB / 5400 RPM / 32m) F4 "EcoGreen" drives with original 3 year warranties (both good until July, 2014) - serial numbers of the drives are 3 digits apart. These were purchased to build a mirrored drive set to back up data on a media server I was building once upon a time. Drives are bare OEM style in the plastic clamshells with mounting screws + a user guide, never installed or even taken out of the packaging since I've had them.

Looking for $175 cash for the pair or trade for firearm stuff (5.56 or .308 ammo, AR stuff, Ruger 10/22 or other .22 rifles, etc..). PM me what you have, I'm fine with trades + cash from you but am not interested in adding cash on my end.

OK. What's needed
just like the Second rule of gunfights states......Bring a Gun!...... 9mm, .38, 41, 44, 45, will do the job.

Holster, not needed for a Tyro, but you cannot shoot Man v Man without one. The trigger MUST be covered.
Round count, in a perfect world 100 would suffice. If you have the slightest idea you might miss, bring more....lots more. I don't miss much but I still bring 200
Hearing protection, if you want to be able to talk with your grandkids bring it, learning sign language at 50 isn't easy.
Eye Protection, good quality sunglasses, safety glasses or prescription glasses are MANDATORY, they should wrap around the side or have side panels.
Think of your shooting glasses as your American Express Card, don't leave home without them. We're shooting at Steel, bullets shatter, pieces of them bounce.
Clothes...This is Minnesota, bring snow clothes, rain gear, sunscreen, shorts....you get the picture...be a boy scout.

If you believe the TV weather forecasters, we should have a nice day... Maybe

Hydration, bring something to drink, it may be hot (or cold) so bring water or something else. (personally I don't consume caffeine when shooting it gives me the shakes)
Food, the town is six miles from the range and there are no facilities on site, bring some lunch, you might get hungry otherwise.
Start Time, Setup will be at 8:30, Shooting will start at 9:30.
COF, Four stages, each of 4 strings with the best three times to count. The winner will be the one with the lowest total time for the 12 runs.
$15 for Non Members, $10 for Members. (Gopher Campfire Club Members)

I don't eat after going to the range unless I've showered first.
I usually spend 2 hours on the range and have done so for the past month or so. Before that, I hadn't shot in 25 years.
First thoughts, very good fit and finish and the gun disappears in both feel and concealment, I hardly notice it at all even when sitting down on it. Going to try it with the TCP as well and imagine that will be pretty much non existent in this setup.
So far so good... anyone else try one of these?

After searching around I came up with a few different threads on similar subjects, but nothing that specifically pertains to my question.

I had always heard that a person may legally buy a handgun via private sale if they are 18 and from a FFL if they are 21 and have a permit to purchase. This makes it all a bit hard to understand.

After reading the other threads I came to the conclusion that private handgun sales in MN do not require a transfer permit if you know the person, know they arent going to commit a crime with the firearm, and are legally allowed to own it. I understood that, while verifying that the buyer has a permit to purchase will help simplify the process, it is not a necessity for the buyer to have a PTP if the criteria are met.

So, a permit to purchase is not required for a private sale? It is legal for someone age 18-20 to have a handgun transferred to them (not having a permit to purchase).

Is it legal for a parent (21+) with a permit to purchase, to buy a firearm as a gift for someone 18-20 without a permit to purchase? Would there need to be transfer papers for something like that?

I'm not looking for loop-holes here, I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the law because, as it seems with most laws / regulations, there is a lot of grey area.

I went to cabelas after work to buy some range ammo for my Taurus TCP. Im just casually looking at the selection and i see out of the corner of my eye one of the "Gun guys" who works there. He proceded to grill me on ammo and why i shouldnt buy hollowpoints for my .380 (didnt ask for his angry opinion) and asked why i wanted to buy ammo today and i told him that i was just looking to buy some to break in the new Taurus and how i was waiting on my carry permit. He then flies off the hangle about how awful Taurus is and how all their guns are made in South America and everyone hes ever owned (which apparently was everyone one of them) was a piece of crap. I informed him that many are now made in Miami and he just wouldnt believe it and looked at me like i was clueless.

I tend to have a lot of patience for people like this.

To top it off he starts asking me what sort of hearing protection i use at the range and i told him i use ear plugs. He flies off the handle and tells me that i am going to go deaf and tries to sell me a 50 dollar headset ad a box of earplugs. I calmly turned around and walked away.

I have never had an experience like this at that store and it has left me kind of sour.

So posting here for two reasons:
First to get feedback on the knife shown. Anyone familiar with these? It is a Smith & Wesson, made in Germany (S&W imports and brands them). They have a 3 1/2" stainless steel, spring loaded blade. 4.5" closed, about 8" open. VERY sharp. Has a pocket clip on the back. Also has a seat belt cutter, and a window punch on the end. Salesman told me these are very popular with cops and firefighters. Also comes in a case with velcro closure and belt loop. I've found similar knives online in the same MSRP range, but not this exact knife.

All that said, I think its a dang good knife, and have a box of them I'd like to sell through. Suggested retail is $89 each. I'm selling them for just $5 over my cost, for three reasons: I had them marked with my phone number on the handle and business name on the blade, so its an advertisement for me. Hoping they provide some word of mouth sales for me. Secondly, I am small and just starting out, and the word of mouth will do me a lot more good than sitting on these for a while trying to make a fat profit on them. And third is kind of tied to second...as I am just starting out, I have very little cash flow, and I have a bunch tied up in these knives. So the quicker i can move them and recoup some cost, the quicker I can get more inventory. Turn and burn inventory is the name of the game for me. Low margins, and high turns.

MSRP is $89. After shipping I paid $41 per knife. Asking $46 each, plus $5 if you want it shipped. Accept credit cards by phone, paypal (via gift, or add 3% for the fee if you do it as a purchase), or cash face to face. Can meet around the TC metro area Monday. I'll be in Golden Valley Monday, coming from the Forest Lake area, so I'm pretty flexible on where. Any other day next week I can meet in the Forest Lake, Blaine area.

Thanks for looking.
Matt

There's a possibility I may have some extra money at the end of the month and I have an itch to buy a revolver in 44 Mag. I've always loved the lines of the S&W Model 29 ever since Clint Eastwood made it famous in the Dirty Harry movies.

While I know my way around 1911's I'm not sure what to look for when looking at a used revolver. I've heard the M29's can get loose after shooting full power loads but other than that I know little about them.

What are some of the things you look for when looking at a used revolver? Also, how do the Ruger Redhawks and various Taurus models stack up versus a S&W? What are their weak points to look out for?
