Re: Best rifle ranges in MN

I used to belong to gopher and Huntly, and currently belong to Delano. I've never had trouble getting a look at the facilities before I joined. Most of them have pictures on their websites and you can look at them on google earth just to see whether it's even worth arranging a tour in person.

Re: Doe tags 2015

I got one for 271. The point thing is from them going to a preference point system. You get a preference point every year you don't draw. IIRC they used to have a dummy area set up if you just wanted a preference point and didn't want to draw that year.

Re: Over unders

I got my Citori on sale for around a grand about 5 years ago. It shouldn't be cost prohibitive, but it may not be the best choice for reasons already mentioned.

Does Beaver Brook go out past 100 yards on the rifle range?

Re: shooting sports in trouble?

I shoot in trap league. Calling myself competitive might be a stretch, but I still hunt deer and plan on going back out west for elk and antelope and doing a little more rabbit and squirrel hunting. I actually got into trap because I wasn't doing much pheasant hunting anymore.

Re: Club near Nowthen

Yes, your place. You have 9 acres - why would you join a club? It's about 1 acre of trees. The rest of it is wetland made up of cattails, willows and standing water. I'm not sure, but I suspect that some if it is floating peat. I'm fat and out of shape, and I'm not really planning on going out ther...

Re: shooting sports in trouble?

There's certainly growing pains associated with HS trap. At Delano, we shut down the rifle and pistol ranges to shoot trap. For the weeks that HS trap overlaps with summer league, that's 4 evenings a week 2 league and 2 HS). With a HS team of about 60, we're seeing probably 15-20 HS kids shooting wi...

Club near Nowthen

I just bought 9 acres by Nowthen. I can hear shooting from the property, which I'm pretty sure is Minnetonka Game and Fish. I understand that they have 2-3 year waiting list and need a reference from a member in good standing. Where does one go to meet a member in good standing, and is there another...

Re: shooting sports in trouble?

I think that they're doing OK. High school trap is one of the fastest growing sports in the state. I think 3 gun is doing OK.

Re: Range Finders, what are some good ones?

regardless of what you get, I'd spring for one with the scanning mode. When you're way out, and try to put the reticle on what you're trying to range and hit the button, the reticle usually moves off of it. Or you can put it into scanning mode and run the reticle around and it keeps reading.

Re: Range Finders, what are some good ones?

Anyone besides me have trouble with their Leica not working when it's cold? I have a Leica 1200 that works great if you keep it warm. One of the guys from elk camp runs a Bushnell that he likes.

Re: Elk hunt in Montana

My elk hunts are in Wyoming at ~7k feet. I get around OK, but it doesn't take much for me to get winded. I generally have to slow down, especially when I'm climbing. You don't need a .300 magnum unless you want an excuse for a new rifle. The wife of the rancher where I hunt uses a 25-06 to good effe...

Re: Ring Lapping?

I have a ring lapping kit from wheeler, but I've never lapped rings with it. I leave the rings loose to the base, and tighten the rings to the lapping bar. Then I tighten the rings to the bases. The wheeler kit has alignment bars (2 seperate bars ground to points). I've never needed to lap the rings...

Re: Cantilever slug barrel for 20 gage 870

Any ideas on where to get one? I'm probably going to the Sioux Falls gun show next weekend. Cabela's has remington and mossburg. Midwayusa has mossburg. Fleet farm in Brooklyn Park had one of the brands, but it isn't there now. I haven't looked anywhere beyond that. Is hastings still making one? Mos...
