Anything short of confiscation now is just a step to confiscation later. Without a complete ban on firearms, turnins and mandatory penalties, you have no hope of reducing the firearms crime rate.
When the new law doesn't work, they'll pass another more restrictive law.

Carry everywhere it is allowed. I rarely have one beer if I'm carrying, because although it is legal, if you ever had to use it your lawyer bills are going to be much higher than if you just drank a coke.
