It would suck to get your permit back and have NO HANDGUNS stamped on. I'd guess it would have something to do with the department you're going through.

From almost every bit of info I've ever come across, stay away from dust cover mounted optics. Go for the clamp on side rail mount.

Who's done it? Do I need to get a center reamer? I've watched a few youtube videos on it, but they tend have nicer workshops than me.

The range I used to go to constantly had Blazer alum case on sale. So I used to shoot more alum than anything else. Never had a problem.
Some guns just don't like some ammo. Of course, I used to religious about cleaning afterwards.
