Re: Minimalist 1911?

Precisely why I don't participate in the various pistol games. While I'm sure they are a lot of fun and really help to popularize shooting in general, I would be afraid of ingraining bad habits which are not conducive to combat situations. The combat pistol training I have done has really opened my...

Re: Minimalist 1911?

Novaks will require milling the slide. Wilson makes some good ones as does kings that do not require milling. I have a couple of different styles you can look at. Let me know. If he has a smith put the sights on, then it doesn't really matter beyond the price. I am not familiar with the particular ...

Re: Minimalist 1911?

I paid $300 for my Armscor Rock Island Armory GI, slightly used two days ago. I have three other plastic 45's. The point of my original post was to inquire about some different sights. I'm not looking to make this a race gun. It certainly doesn't need curb feelers. It was cheap and I'd like to keep...

Re: Opinions on XD and XDM

That almost goes without saying .... if you buy a gun sight unseen; never handled little enough fired it or a smaller version; then you are trusting your purchase to pure and simple luck. Just maybe ... maybe; that may not apply to 1911's in certain cases, but if you are good enough to recognize th...

Re: Opinions on XD and XDM

I don't know if I will offer anything new, but I will stay on topic. ;) I own an XD9SC and have been very pleased with it. The first thing I would suggest, if you haven't done so already, is go to a gun shop and actually handle both the XD and XDM in as many variations as they have (i.e. barrel len...

Re: Minimalist 1911?

And note that S&W and NOT Kimber or Springfield has been winning the 1911 competitions for the last few years (which, I am not sure, I saw it on some show I was watching on the Sportsman's Channel). I chose my S&W 1911 without that knowledge, but I shoot so well with it, it was kind of vindi...

Carry Pistol Storage?

How do most people store their carry pistol? The reason is that I have become very comfortable carrying my 1911 cocked and locked. Clearly, I don't go shooting my self defense ammo on a daily basis, so I am wondering what most people do when they put their pistol away for the evening. I usually drop...

Re: Opinions on XD and XDM

If you rent the gun, have them field strip the gun in front of you and then ... inevitably, have them clean it before you go shooting. I have rented a couple of guns at Bill's Gun range, and while they do clean them, they don't clean them often enough for my liking. To compare guns, you really want ...

Re: Opinions on XD and XDM

They're garbage; get a Glock. I own a Glock 17 and a Glock 21SF and love[d] them both. These guns are high quality guns and I am happy to own them. My wife really loves the 17 and that is her weapon of choice. I have since fallen in love with me SW1911PD. The only thing I changed was to replace the...

Re: Blazer 40cal sighting @ 30+ boxes

Blazer isn't the best of ammo anyway. It is relatively cheap, even if you buy brass. The problem I have is they are not consistent from lot to lot with how they crimp the bullet. I have found in a few cases an enormous amount of key holing. I was working with an instructor last January and I asked ...

Blazer 40cal sighting @ 30+ boxes

I just stopped in the Fleet Farm in Blaine and they had at least 30 boxes of Blazer 40 caliber ammo. I didn't get the price and it was NOT cased in brass.

Oddly, this was the ONLY ammo they had in stock behind the counter, bar none!

I hope this can be useful to somebody.

Re: Blue Dot powder and 357 Magnum

Sorry about the lecture Veldy, but you caught me at a bad time, and FWIW, the pressure spike is always at the beginning of the ignition where the volume is at absolute minimum and the bullet has not started to move yet. Not only do you have to overcome the inertia of the bullet, but you also have t...

Re: Blue Dot powder and 357 Magnum

I recommend loading some 38+P data loads for practice- similar feel - similar results and safe in any MODERN 38 labeled or recommended for +P use. There are a lot of powders out there that you can do that with and I think that BD is one of them - BUT I would have to check the books. Yes, that is wh...
