Re: Range idiots

The range where I learned how to shoot permitted unloaded guns with the action open away from the firing line. No, it's not as safe, mainly because it's more difficult to monitor compliance, and I'm not advocating that we go back there, but at the same time it's not something I would necessarily mak...

Re: Binoculars, What do I want?

I believe that a modest-sized 7-8x pair is the best choice for most uses. The fixed-focus ones are to be avoided for any application other than horizon scanning and other long-distance tasks (as in nautical use). With the more compact roof prism binoculars, you have to pay more to get equal image qu...

Re: I really like my new G17

If you are in an actual self-defense scenario and still have something to shoot at after emptying a full magazine on a G17 then fine motor control is going to be the least of your problems.

Re: Gun Safe Access question

I'm thinking that a gun bracket which simply requires adult strength to open might be a good compromise for that one go-to gun. In theory the action on any current production automatic rifle sold in the U.S. would meet this test. It's required by federal law. Not sure this would pass muster with a ...

Re: .22lr pistol reccomendations

I have an AMT Lightning, which is essentially an improved copy of the Ruger Mark II. I understand that they are no longer made as a result of a lawsuit of some kind between Ruger and AMT. I've probably put 10,000 rounds through it or more, and shot more than a few rabbits, and I recommend the AMT an...

Re: I really like my new G17

Well, they're good for what they are. I have one. They're not art. ::shrug:: I was brought up to believe that, after inserting a mag, the slide should be pulled back with the non-shooting hand rather than the release being depressed, because doing so a) is faster b) is less likely to stay out of bat...

Re: Could tougher laws have saved Pam Taschuk?

The peoblem is that she continued to live with him. Exactly. And the other problem is that constitutionally we cannot keep people in jail for the crime they might possibly commit tomorrow, and a good thing it is. Some women remain in abusive relationships due to wishful thinking, a perceived lack o...

Re: Gander Mt. - What everyone should know.

1) You buy stock in a company, you win or lose depending on the company's fortunes, the economy, the sector, and the direction of the current herd instinct on the street. 2) If you are a minority shareholder, win or lose, you'll probably end up being treated less fairly than you would in other circu...

Re: help with a mn hunting law

Yes, the recent changes allowing uncased weapons did away with the distance requirement. Good riddance. It was supposed to prevent people from hunting grouse from ATVs, and it didn't. Maybe the fact that grouse hunting territory averages one conservation officer per thousand square miles had somethi...

Re: Gun Safe Access question

Regarding fingerprint readers --- As with any lock there is a tradeoff between speed of access and security. In some readers this is adjustable, others not. I have a fingerprint reader on my computer which is reliable and fast, and reasonably secure, although sometimes I have to swipe a second time ...

Re: help with a mn hunting law

I believe the reason you're not finding anything is that there are no such restrictions to speak of when hunting small game with birdshot in Minnesota.

Re: Carry Pistol Storage?

I guess this thread shows that everyone has a system. I generally carry a .380 in a pocket holster when out and about, and I put it in the safe when I'm at home, pocket holster, magazine, and all, without unloading. I have full-size pistols in quick-access safes in several locations around the house...

Re: Nice to see prices actually dropping for a change!

Regarding J&S, I would like to note that I have purchased two firearms there and found the service to be quite good and the firearms prices reasonable. Ammunition and accessory prices are high, and I too have found that the staff can get rather caught up in other conversations -- often of no obv...
