As 1911fan said, lots of times the very dark black stains are oil or cosmoline soaked deep into the wood, or water stains that turned the wood dark. If the stock is soaked in cosmoline, leave it lay in the sun, or heat it gently with a heat gun, or like I do, prop it up in front of my (gas) woodstov...

I've been shooting the BESA winter pistol league for 4 years, and it is a hoot! Some folks are pretty serious, most are not, lots of encouragement, lots of laughs. Tons of fun for $20-I'll be there after (burp) having some effen breakfast tomorrow.

I have also shot thousands of these in 9mm, and .45. Never a problem, reasonable accurate. Cheap used to be $5 a box, now I don't usually see it below $8.
