I am a big fan of .22WMR. .22WMR normally is cheaper and more readily available than the .17's. With .22mag, there is also more handgun options, like the PMR-30 or revolvers. This way you have an excuse to buy a rifle and a pistol.

I am a big fan of the PC9. They are heavy, but a better trigger than the Camp 9. Sub2000 is a fun gun too. For the price of a Beretta, you may be able to get two carbines.

500 yards for any game would far exceed my capabilities. But, there are plenty of choices in many calibers that can do the job, with a qualified/experienced shooter.
