Re: Accuracy of AR .308 vs. M1A socom16

The AR variants will always be easier and cheaper to make shoot well and keep them shooting well than an M14 variant.

Re: The Inconvenient Truth About Newt

I'v come to the conclusion that Ron Paul is the best of the Republican field. While I'm not crazy about his foreign policy, he's the only one who seems to take our fiscal situation seriously. As far as polls go, I'd like to remind everyone that in 1980 the polls had the peanut farmer from Georgia tr...

Re: if you were to build a bolt gun....

Being the old cuss I am, if I were to build a hunting rifle it would probably be in .308 or 30-06.If recoil were an issue I'd go with a .260 Rem, .270 Win or maybe your .280 Rem. If I were planning on hunting big bears I would more than likely look for something that started with a 4.

Re: M1 Garand from CMP

Everyone should have at least 1 M1 rifle. I personally prefer shooters over collectors but thats just me.

Once you decide and receive your rifle, I happen to know a guy who runs a CMP program where you can learn to shoot it.

Re: Ghost Ring Pistol Sights

A friend put one on his Glock years ago. I wasn't impressed with it and he sold the pistol a short time later.

Re: To cut the stock or not?

Cut the sock down to fit him, but save the piece you cut off and glue it back on as he grows.

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

The canon powder we use works best when heated. Ok, I can understand that, why didn't you just say so in the beginning. Do you guys shoot 50BMG's competitively? I know one of you has one. Not me, NRA Highpower is my game, mostly Service Rifle. I toyed with the idea with 50 cal when the Barret semi ...

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

Do you get the idea - not every shot takes the same amount of time - causing cartridge to stay in hot chamber longer than planned. If it is already hot, warm, less pressure change will have occurred from last shot. Doing so keeps Standard Deviation between shots to less than a value of 7. (Assuming...

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

Cold works to but has more variability when cartridges are loaded into a hot chamber. The whole game is to reduce any and all variables that you can control. I fire 2-5 rounds during sight-in period which warms the rifle chamber. When range is called HOT for Record Fire, I load a WARM cartridge int...

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

I have used Bryan Litz's BC's to go from a 100 yard zero to 1000 and land in the 10 ring (F-Class 10- so Highpower X-ring) just about every time, the few times I didn't were likely do velocities changing because of temp, his numbers seem to be the truest out there. I can usually get to within .5moa...

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

OldmanFCSA, I was hoping you had some real world numbers to see if the numbers we came up with in our respective examples were close to reality. We can debate who's BC numbers are right and who's aren't all day long, what counts is where the bullet meets the target in the real world. I have shot a 5...

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

For those interested, Brian Litz has an article in Long Range Hunting magazine which explains G1 vs G7 ballistic coefficient numbers.

Re: Testing new Long Range rifle.

What I've discovered from this thread is some of you guys have a bunch more disposable income than I do. $2 per bullet! :o I've been spending some time at the GS Custom Bullet web page that Ragged has been talking about. I don't know if this is an honest representation of the bullet he's talking abo...
