Re: Shooting Trap - Going to Start Wednesday

The choke really doesn't matter with US style "trap." You will get to shoot while the bird is within 30-40 yards if you don't pooch it. Handicap it might make a bit of difference, especially if you are slower in the reflexes, more choke will be better to a point. At the 18 yard mark, you w...

Re: .44mag (.429) 240gr TMJ - Speer - Go/No Go in Tube Magazine?

Just looking at the picture, and from some old speer silhouette bullets I have - I think the issue is that the meplat (the flat part) is significantly smaller on those bullets when compared to a "standard" .44 bullet. The fit in a tubular magazine is rather loose, so you could get an edge ...

Re: How often to replace defensive ammo - a story

These were/are Winchester/Western shells. I also had some old Canadian imperials he brought back from a hunting trip- 1 5/8 oz 2 3/4 loads, but they had a note written on the box not to shoot them (of course, I did...) Not quite as obnoxious as these Winchester shells. About 1300 FPS. A true short m...

Re: How often to replace defensive ammo - a story

Kind of the opposite experience, but still not that good. I inherited one of my grandfather's guns. When he brought it, in order to get it, he had to buy a case of the then new 3" mag loads. Grandpa didn't put much store in magnums, so I got the case, minus 1 box that an uncle used fox hunting ...

Re: Outbreak Omega

Ahh, but the Trigun match everyone did get like $250+ of prizes. And they handed out waay more than 15 guns. But prizes were mostly awarded on order of finish. (Although they did go far enough down that even I won stuff like upper receivers...) I guess I was just spoiled by that. Buying ammo and get...

Re: Outbreak Omega

I dunno about "generous" prizes. About 1/3 to 1/2 of us were told to come up and get the advertising shirt that ain't in your size at the end.

From someone who preregistered, it was not very "generous", especially when compared to DPMS's old Trigun match.

Re: Step 1: ND into body. Step 2: ??

Odds are if you have been shot while hunting, it will be with a large caliber weapon. You will not have the time to do much of anything about it yourself. The best thing you can do is dial 911 and say "I've been shot" and hope they can get someone there really fast if you are alone. You wi...

Re: Getting the most out of your (cheap) reloading gear.

Chuck it out the window and get a Dillon 1050.

Re: Looking for thoughts...

Lights also give away your location and give someone a target to shoot at. There is a reason that people experienced in shooting other people use weapons-mounted lights for CQB. The key word is "experienced." As in, real world, not the internet or video games. I thought the "really e...

Re: How many wear hearing protection while hunting?

I've tried them a few times, and while I agree its a good idea, and if I am doing something that is going to have repeated shooting, I usually put in some amplified plugs, my biggest problem is that my hearing is so screwed up that when I use the amplification I loose all direction sense. I've tried...

Re: Forget that Saiga Shotgun

AR stands for Armalite. So this doesn't really play out (unless you are just joking).
I was always told AR stood for Armalite Rifle.
Hmmm, I was always told it stood for just AR malite. :? Joe probably thought you meant the naughty "automatic rifle" and assumed you were goi...

Re: deer rifle poll

While I usually hunt whitetails with a 12 ga., it is by no means my preference. Rifles I have had no losses of deer, but shotguns, lots of funny things seem to happen. As far as I'm concerned, a deer rifle is over .224 bore. Sorry, but the varmint guns are not deer rifles- they are capable of killin...

Re: bullet puller suggestions

Hornady collet puller works for me as well, but a couple of things. It doesn't work well with coated bullets, especially if they are well crimped. (moly, lubaloy, the blue stuff that Barnes used on its XLC bullets) and doesn't work worth a *&% for cast lead bullets (at least in the pistol calibe...

Re: Forget that Saiga Shotgun

If you bump fire, all you will do IS hit the field. If you want a AR pattern shotgun, wait until CMMG gets theirs out. This one is not good. I see lots of dove around here when I hunt geese in the early goose season. I never see doves when I want to shoot doves. My brother has shot doves in the Caro...
