Re: How much rimfire do you shoot per year?

Usually from a scoped bolt action rifle for offhand practice. I tried to get as near a duplicate of my hunting rifle as possible. Probably 3000 rounds a year. Mostly cheap federal, but occasionally I will use either Eley tenex or CCI green tag to keep myself honest. I don't shoot much handgun .22 as...

Re: Reloading economics

Money wise, even the lowly 9mm will save you money to reload if you buy in bulk, collect range brass, and don't include your time. Truth be told there is a lot of truth to the saying you won't save anything, but you will get to shoot more. Time wise, there is a little issue with production rates. I ...

Re: How hot is too hot?

Umm. You can get a barrel too hot. Look at the throat erosion on any full auto barrel that has been shot much. A .50 BMG M2 Barrel has a much shorter lifespan than the same barrel with the same number of rounds out of a single shot .50. The warmer it is, the faster you will get throat erosion. The m...

Re: How "thick" is your handgun?

I think the Taurus in 28Ga is probably going to be the winner.

Re: Anybody have a Beta C mag for their AR?

Yep. The problem is if you forget to get some.... To be honest, the way I hold my rifle, I don't have the problems that Tim is complaining of with the Cmag. The Cmag got a bad rep for unreliability with the Army (SF types) and by folks who won't do the maintenance in more civil climates. The Surefir...

Re: Anybody have a Beta C mag for their AR?

I have a couple that I use for 3 gun shoots. I think there are a few others here who do that as well. The only time one really didn't work was when I put it on a cop friend's M16 and it died after the 5th mag through. Unloaded it and regraphited, and it worked fine again. They are pretty reliable if...

Re: Winchester Ranger

Talk to the people who sell it. Its not illegal to buy or sell most LEO ammo, as long as its not AP handgun ammo, its the agreement that the guy who brought the ammo from the distributor or company made. The usual deal is that the stuff you buy is something that is either excess or 3rd hand. I have ...

Re: Varmint rifle suggestions?

The big issue with burning out a barrel is how hot it gets. The really overbore cases have a lot of hot gas eroding the throat, so they tend to go quicker than more standard calibers, but if you don't have to shoot strings and let the gun cool off, they are not as bad as the press would lead you to ...

Re: Sink in basement...

I have not tried the pin method because I thought washing would be a PITA.

Do you have any problems with the brass working with the pins and requiring more regular annealing (a step I try and avoid at all costs)?

Re: shotgun wads that seat extra deep.

If you are shooting the slugs that you drop in the shot wads, it shouldn't be much of a problem safety wise. Odds are, your crimps will be bad, and your velocities might be a bit low because they will not ignite properly both of which will give poor accuracy. If you do shoot them, check for bore obs...

Re: new to hunting coyotes. tips?

Live bait has a long history in hunting and fishing. The main reason it is not used for sporting purposes anymore is that it was too effective. Live decoys for waterfowl were hideously effective. Live bait for tiger and lion were also (especially if you injured them prior to putting them out.) Read ...

Re: is this what i think it is?

Pretty neat.... I have a suspicion those are not live ammo. The other thing those may be are factory proving dummies, that have never been primed. The reason I say that is one is a old fashioned wadcutter bullet, and they may have been something that WW put out as a set of proving dummies for arsena...

Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

Naa... it is not too dangerous if you follow the manuals. They are written the way they are so you have some margin for error. Not that that fact justifies carelessness. As Sam said, the down side is pretty extreme. The loads I was experimenting with that were doing these things are loads that the m...

Re: Shipping guns

Long guns you can mail them to yourself in the US. If you don't have an address yet, it is legal to mail them to general delivery at the post office. I have done this on quite a few hunting trips domestically. Handguns, they have to go via a private carrier and one stop has to be a FFL. If its to an...
