Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

Possibly, but I was told by a guy at Hodgdon that I should be doing what he called the SAAMI Twirl, which would position the powder at the back of the case, and that this was positional. Basically, it was a result of inconsistencies in igniting the powder uniformly, but he did say my experiences wer...

Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

I can't say, as I didn't run the tests at that level. What I am saying with the 6 powders I did test, the 2 very fast (Clays and VV310) occasionally showed one or 2 of the 5 rounds having a significant outlier spike in pressure with long loading. I started the tests with rounds that were "about...

Re: i want a new rifle scope for my deer gun....

For a hunting rifle in .270, I would either get a Zeiss conquest 3-9 variable, a Leupold 3-9 variable or a Nikon 3-9 variable. all are (to me) middle of the road price wise and should work well. I think the glass quality is Zeiss- Nikon- Leupold. Leupold however is probably the best in the industry ...

Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

All I am saying about solo 1000 is that when I was in Ahlman's on friday, the cans all had red stickers saying do not use in handgun loads. If they since then have taken that off, then I am post dated on that, or the cans they have are not that new. Caveat Emptor and all that stuff. As for the infor...

Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

OK, to answer your questions- Why did they print the warning- The reason they put it on is they did no pressure testing with the loads in handguns to speak of, and had reformulated the powder. Is the pressure the same at the same velocity? No. Somewhat close, but not identical. The long loaded cases...

Re: lol southerners...

The line is if they fly a toy over someone else's property, during a shooting match, it may get shot. It sounds like the issue was that they shot at it over a road right of way, where the toy had a "right" to be. Registered aircraft are different. Just get a tail number, those guys you jus...

Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

Also, be sure you are not using the new solo 1000 that has stuck on all the cannisters "Do not use in handgun loads." If they say that, there are lots of other powders that will work, and why give them the business if they put something like that on as a warning? (yes, I know why they did,...

Re: Long oal and more powder vs short and less powder

The only reason I went to long with heavy charge weight loads was that the 1911 that I was using them in refused to feed the standard length loads. I went up until I made power factor and the quit. (this was minor loads, the major loads were quite a bit high- 50+ KPSI.) While a long loaded round wil...

Re: researching Remington R15 VTR for Varmints

Depends by what you mean for varmint hunting. If you mean Prairie dogs, any heavy barreled AR should be OK. I would stay away from the faster twist barrels (1:7 or 1:8) in .223 because they may not stabilize the lighter bullets well. A free floated handguard with a swing swivel to mount a bipod woul...

Re: Mosin Nagant stock accuracy

Yeah but it was 20 people handed one round and one guy handed a mosin and told the enemy is there, if you run we shoot you. If the guy with the gun falls, pick up the rifle... Personally, I think one trained guy with the AR would win against 20 untrained guys. The problem is when they send 1 guy mor...

Re: Accidental or negligent?

Depends on who you are talking about. The person who was shot? Accidental. Her bad luck to be near a stupid. The instructee? Depends on how much she knows about guns. Probably accidental, as it was the instructor that caused the accident, but if she pulled the trigger while it was pointed at another...

Re: 69gr SMK load?

I think you are making a bit of a mistake here. First, when I was doing the 69 gr SMK for my 3 gun rifle it was shooting 24.0 gr of 748 with a COAL of 2.240. The reason for the short COAL is that SMK's have a somewhat irregular hollow point and if I put them at 2.245 or longer, I had jams when a pie...

Re: Ithaca SxS

It looks like a grade 2 or 3 Ithaca double. (New Ithaca Double) It seems to be in really good shape from the pictures. What its worth is dependent on what gauge it is and if its entirely original, and if there are any hidden flaws. If it was refinished, $300-$500, regardless. Otherwise, if its a 20 ...

Re: When to Trim and When to Size Bottle Necks - Troll Fodder

I usually full length size, trim, chamfer/deburr, polish, and then size it again. Its probably not nearly as important in what order you do it if you are just neck sizing. If its a really unusual case, I will anneal after the full length resize, but before trimming. The only real advantage that trim...

Re: Could Be Worse

California is bad. So are New York and Chicago. But the work a citizen has to go through to just be able to own one gun in most countries causes them to pale by comparison. And the good ol' USA isn't too friendly to legal gun owners from other countries, either. Ask someone who wants to hunt here wh...
