Re: Remington Stock Question

That kind of thing is sometimes designed in. whether you remove it or leave it I'm not sure what would be best. It gives the action support. How stiff is the stock? Jon It's a laminated stock, so it's quite stiff. ALSO: The gun is already shooting sub-MOA with factory ammo. So I'm inclined not to m...

Remington Stock Question

Yesterday I did the dollar bill test on my Remington VLS to determine whether or not the barrel is free floated, and it's not. I removed the stock and discovered a small hump inside the barrel channel, directly opposite the front sling swivel mount. This hump is right where the dollar bill meets wit...

farmerj wrote:One thing that I keep hearing coming up lately on the Savages are bad rifling.

Seems they had some chatter or something going on in the barrel.

The guy at GM suspected a problem with the rifling --- which is the only part of the gun Lyle couldn't inspect in any detail.

Re: Mounting a Scope

Lyle mounted and boresighted the scope. I took the gun back to the 25 yard range AND ... it's still shooting a mile wide. So back to Gander Mountain, where the sales guy was very understanding --- i.e. he didn't try to convince me that it's user error. But the best he could offer was to send the gun...

Re: Mounting a Scope

Lyle says the crown is just fine and the headspacing is right on the money. He doesn't have a bore scope so he can't inspect the rifling in any detail. He will mount my scope and boresight it. Then I'll take it back to the 25 yard range. If the gun still doesn't shoot straight GM will send it back t...

Re: Mounting a Scope

I took the gun back to Gander Mountain, where Lyle the gunsmith will examine it. If he finds a defect, the gun goes back to Savage for repairs. If he finds no defect, he will install and boresight my scope (for free) and I will try again. If the same problem persists ... well, I haven't come up wit...

Re: hero still gets charged

Well done, Mr. McCollough! I hope Walgreens does the decent thing and reimburses him for that citation.

Re: Mounting a Scope

Not to be insulting either, but just double check that the ammo you are shooting is exactly what the gun is chambered for. a tumbling bullet means it is not getting stabilized properly. two things can cause this, one is too heavy or light a bullet for the twist, and the other is a bullet too small ...

Re: Mounting a Scope

My new Savage is acting very strangely. At 25 yards, with the scope bore-sighted (i.e. looking through the bore at the bulls-eye, then zeroing the scope on the same point) I'm shooting about a foot high and two feet to the right. If I aim low and to the left I can get my shots on the paper (barely) ...

Re: Neck Sizing Question

No need to worry about unrealistic expectations or disappointments for this new Savage of mine. As mentioned earlier, it's a poor carpenter who blames his tools. I'm not much of a carpenter or a shooter, but I do understand that the same equipment in different hands can (and probably would) yield di...

Mounting a Scope

I want to mount a really nice scope on a really nice rifle and shoot really tiny groups. Don't we all? I came across an internet article about reaming out the scope rings to achieve maximum surface contact bewteen the ring and scope. Sounds like a gunsmith job to me. Has anyone had this done? And di...
