Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

One thing else to consider.... You drop the rifle and the scope is damaged or rings. Can you get backup or replacements easily? Basically, can whatever locale you go to, support your rifle you put together, spare parts, repairs, ammo, scope, rings etc. Without destroying the trip or cutting it early...

Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

Including a .280 Remington barrel for the 7mm chamberings. Since the .280 is a necked down .30-06. And I have a ton of that brass from shooting the M1. (All once fired.) A 280 Rem is NOT JUST a necked down 30-06. A 270WIN is a necked down 30-06. The 280Rem looks similar but the case shoulder is 0.0...

Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

Kind of on the theme of the OP. Years ago, I bought myself a Stevens 200 chambered in .30-06. It cost me a whopping $185. It's a Savage 110 action. Just doesn't have the rough edges knocked off it like the Savage does. Decent scope on it and a Boyd's Laminated stock, I am still under $500 for the ri...

Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

You mentioned bigger than .30 cal. This comes to my mind.... https://www.henryrifles.com/rifles/45-70-lever-action/ This, for bear I'd rather go all rifleman on it rather than work a bolt while fearing teeth and claws. Hard cast 45-70 FTW https://i.makeagif.com/media/3-18-2015/QKz37J...

Has somebody else stated, you can get 200+ great in it for something like bear

I haven't looked it up in manual yet, but I saw some internet banter about up to 220 grains. That is a decent sized chunk of lead.

As much as I love the.308, find a bear round for it

Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

Normally, I'd agree with you. Plan for the worse and hope for the best. At least that way you can prep for worst case. Suck hind one of you go to Alaska and forget your ammo or it gets misplaced at the outfitters base station where you get ferried in from. There's all kinds of calibers to choose fro...

Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

I'll state it again.

Find a common caliber. One you can find on a gas station shelf in a place like meeker county Colorado.

Because without ammo, all you have is a club

Re: Do all Hunting rig, $1000 budget.

Consider a round common enough that ammo will be available wherever you plan on hunting.

I'm partial to a savage or Stevens myself

Re: Looking for a place to train/shoot

Too many idiots shooting up gun ranges and neighbors complaints about noise have all but shut down most of that activity. If it does happen, it's not really advertised it's happening or shared. Rainbow sportsman club you could driver right up to the shooting bench's. Dumbasses going in and rutting t...
