Re: Newbie question

It's more of a pressure issue, than a desired velocity matter. A heavier bullet generally has to be seated deeper in the case to meet OAL requirements or not extend up past the chamber throat. That results in a decreased case capacity. Also the heavier bullet gives more resistance, both from inertia...

Re: interesting SMAW ammo

Yup. Used to hear that explanation about how the rounds were put together every time weapons platoon talked about 'em. Since it was always pretty nearly a word for word match on the description, I'm sure the spotting round's construction was covered as part of the SMAW gunner's training syllabus. Th...

Re: 45-70 opinions?

I have been doing a bit or research as well so this thread has helped quite a bit. Thanks. As of right now I am pretty much sold on a falling-block action. Anybody have any complaints with the Ruger No.1 in 45-70? No complaints about the strength of the Ruger #1 action; the very hottest .45-70 load...

Re: 45-70 opinions?

Darn, I'm still torn! I love the 45-70 for an all around brush gun, but I can't help but think I may appreciate a round that holds its energy a little further. If I'm shooting at 100 yards or closer, the 45-70 is a no brainer but now, I'm looking at the Marlin 450 as it's pretty much a 45-70 that k...

Re: Gun shops in and around the Twin Cities

Duncan's (off Superior St., which is on the Lake Mille Lacs side of the Hwy, at the very N end of Isle): Bought my M&P .40 Shield there before I'd seen a Shield in person anywhere else. If you haven't been there, picture the gun library at Cabela's, only several ROOMS of it instead of just one....

Re: Gun shops in and around the Twin Cities

Sticking to just places I've been in/bought from this year and would recommend. Leaving GunStop off due to their situation, but they've been one of my faves since back a couple of store moves ago. Al's : have bought or traded into a couple there so far this year. Frontiersman : just bought yet anoth...

Re: Whats your favorite handgun you've owned?

I've had a bunch of good handguns. A number of which got sold or traded and are missed. Others not so much. Own some that I like very much due to some combination of ergonomics/quality/accuracy/whatever. Some that are cherished because of connections to friends and relatives who've passed on. Howeve...

Re: T/C pistols

What model would you recommend getting? Id like to have a 223 rifle, 243 pistol and maybe a muzzleloader and 20 ga. Also what are prices for the gun and also the barrels? With the calibers you're contemplating, it's going to have to be an Encore. The Contender won't handle/isn't made in the more se...
