Don't over think this too much. I put a deadbolt lockset on a basement closet that will keep the kids out. Granted I put the gunsafe in the closet, but the locked closet itself meets the legal requirement.

Here's a scary thought... Every shell casing you leave at the range has your ID on it. Granted, your average gang banger doesn't spend a lot of time at the range...
