Hollow-Point Question

Postby El Bandito Blanquito on Sat Dec 05, 2009 10:30 am

So I picked up some defense rounds at Joe's the other day, and the salesman said that it would be wise to put a box of these hollowpoints through my Glock 26 to make sure that they work properly. Now, I know almost nothing about hollow points and whether they usually feed or perform differently while loading and firing. So my question is, do I need to spend the extra 20+ Bucks on a box of 20 just to make sure that the Glock 26 handles them?

Personally, I would say yes, go get another box, go to the range, and shoot. Mainly to see how they feed, and also, to make sure that they're hitting where all your other bullets hit.

Absolutely... You should always run a box of your carry ammo through your gun to make sure they have no issues and feed/eject reliably. However, I would look into buying your ammo at Streicher's... You can get it there for $20-$30 for a box of 50.

They'll feed. I would shoot a magazine full (10) just to see where they hit the paper, as stated in the previous post.

I would buy a couple of boxes. Personally, I would put no less yhan 100, and possibly quite a few more rounds of your personal protection ammo through your carry gun. If God forbid the S would ever HTF, finding out that your Glock doesn't reliably feed your ammo would be a much, much more costly lesson than finding out at the range. FWIW of course.

glocks reputation for eating anything you put into them is well deserved, however, to echo everyone else would you want to find out that the 2nd round is sticky when fighting for your life? i know i wouldn't...

spend the $20 for the confidence. i have carried both sig's and kahrs and they were both slightly sensitive to ammo type.

but then again - you carry for your life, not to look cool or be cheap about it - right?

Sage advice all, thank you. I will be sure to go through at least a box, and to make sure that I test brands out before I depend on them.

I'm all for spending the $ on peace of mind and the protection when it actually makes a difference, I only wanted to make sure it wasn't just 'salesman' talk.

surprised you didn't recommend 1000 round before declaring it as a carry piece

Take a look at Federal HST. I love the stuff. Reliable, consistant, symmetrical and predictible expansion, and I haven't heard of a firearm yet that won't cycle it reliably. Best of all it's cheaper than most. Streichers has it for around $25 a box of 50 last I checked.

I figured that would go without saying. ;)

Buy a revolver ;-)

Seriously, run a couple of full mags through and you should know. I'll second the HST recommendation. I have it on good authority that it's the best sd round Federal makes.

Also don't just shoot the mags like you'd be shooting at a paper target. By this I mean, SLOWLY one shot aimed and then perhaps another in 10 or 15 seconds. Run some through like your life depended on dropping the BG asap. 3-5 quick shots as rapidly as you can, bang,bang,bang,bang.. I had a pistol that shot fine SLOWLY, but didn't feed worth a damn when shot QUICKLY!

I love that the thread started with me griping about a 20$ box of ammo and ended with me buying a new revolver. La Bandita Blanquita would be non-excited by this turn of events.

When test new carry ammo, try shooting many different ways.

Two handed, both very tight and loose grip. Strong hand only. Weak hand only. Sideways. Limp wristed.

In other words, put the handgun in any position or grip that it may need to fire.

Just my opinion.

Yes, Federal HST's are good.

Yes, you should test the ammo yourself in your gun. I have seen more than once that a shooter has problems with the reliability of a gun, but others can shoot it and have zero problems, that is why you need to test your gun with the ammo.

I once had a situation that a Ruger Super Blackhawk would only misfire when I fired it. For me it would misfire 2 or 3 out of 6, but it work 100% for everyone else. Now that was an unusual one to figure out and turned out to be a mechanical problem with the revolver that only surfaced when I fired it.

You need to test the ammo yourself in your gun.

Screw hollow-points..............
Federal EFMJ or even plain ball WILL cease hostilities by any BG(s)...........
you don't have to worry about glass, clothing, materials, and barriers screwing up THE shot............

and if you are not exercising yourself, your weapon, and munitions at least weekly.......well, it's your life......
All men are created equal....It's what they do from there that matters!.
