Sit or Stand?

Postby JoeH on Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:14 pm

I'm wondering if reloaders prefer to sit or stand while running their press.

I originally constructed my bench at the correct height for me to sit while running my press. I was thinking that it would be nice to sit during long loading sessions.

I had a chance to load at a buddy's place last summer. He is setup to load while standing. I think that I prefer it over sitting and may change my setup. The effort to run the press was much less while standing.

What do you do?

I prefer to sit, and have the handle of the press at about eye level at the top of the stroke, and the shell plate at chest height. This seems to be the most comfortable for me, especially if I'm running a batch of a thousand or more.

You might look into an office chair with an adjustable height, it works well for me. If you do decide to stand, a $10 floor stress pad from the Depot will probably prove to be a life saver.

I stand. I have my SDB on a strong mount which puts it too high to load while sitting, unless I were to use a bar stool.

Stand when I pee, sit when I unload.

Me bench with the presses is set up for sitting, the other bench, my "cleaning/sorting bench" is 40" high and has 1" sides all around the edges to catch loose brass that tries to escape.

I built my bench 4 feet tall. I like to stand when I reload, I'm on my ass enough with my job. I'm usually moving around checking charges and adding more brass anyway. I could use a stool if I wanted to, but haven't yet.

My bench is built for standing while reloading.

My main bench is a two-level bench. One side is lower, designed for sitting. The other side is counter height for standing.

The sitting side I designed wanting the handle of the press to be at shoulder height (using the strong mount) while sitting.

I can easily move the setup over to the other side to try standing.

Quit this Tom Foolery of moving your press Joe... This is a reason to buy another 650xl. ;)

I built my bench to stand at and then ue a bar stool if I feel like sitting. I had everything at sit height and when running the progressive I found it a pain to keep getting up to restock. The counter top height works great for me, it allows me to stand when I want and then sit when doing something time consuming like trimming brass.

None of you has a 6" long scar at the base of their spine that goes halfway to their belly-button. Seated in a good lumbar support chair is the only option for me.

I agree. I was in a car accident and hit my head on the roof of my car(I was wearing my seat belt but the roof caved in). I have a compression fracture in my lowest vertebra that never healed right. Sitting is the way to go

Am building a new laboratory and am thinking of setting the bench up at 44" from the floor. A chiropractor friend recommended this, as I am always hunched over and have a lot of back trouble.
