What Bullets do you use?

Postby 870TC on Thu Feb 04, 2010 9:16 pm

I've been reading the "what do you reload post" and was wondering what bullets people like and why?
Handgun or Rifle or both.

I load lead in both whenever possible, usually use Red River or Northern Star Cast. Sometimes use Hornady J-bullets in rifles. Why?, good products, good price, easy to find.

Red River for everything but hunting ammo in pistols. local company, good prices and availablilty. for hunting, Speer 240 gr soft points in the 44.
For the rifles, I try to feed them what they like. My .223s both like Sierra 69 gr match bullet. I don't shoot quite so many so it is worth the added cost for me.

My favorites are the ones I have cast myself.

I've stopped reloading pistol rounds by benefit of working at an ammo manufacurer.

*here's where I get in trouble*

For .45 blasing ammo, I use whatever is lead bullet that is on sale. If it's the right shape, the right weight and a reasonable hardness for the load used I buy the cheap stuff. :hide:

Mostly Laser cast though.

For my .223 I use Sierra Matchking 69gr. My rifles love them. I do like to play around with different bullets just to see what they do, but for now the Matchking is ole' reliable.

I mainly use Hornady and Nosler. I go after coyotes. I use a .223 for that, and I use the 55 grain V max, and the 55 grain Ballistic tip. They both shoot well for me, and they do the job on a yot'e. I have used CT Ballistic SilverTips for deer in my .243. They are 95 grain, and seem to work well. I have taken several deer with them, and they did not go far after the shot. I have a friend that uses the same load for pigs in Texas. He has good results as well. My .357 handles Hornady XTP's 158 grain nicely. With those I can shoot nice groups at 25 yards. If the moon and stars are aligned. I also use Speer gold dot 170 grain cast core in my .357. I have not shot a deer with them yet. I would like to do that to, but once again it is a moon and star thing. :D

I run home cast and Montana Gold in my handguns and Hornady in my rifles. My 243 really shoots well with a 70gr Blitzking, but I can't pay that much for a bullet. The 65gr Hornady's seem to shoot just fine and cost much less than the Blitzking.

To generalize, if it says : Hornady, Speer, Montana Gold, or Winchester on it, for jacketed bullets I've had good luck with them. Montana Gold strictly for .45acp so far. The rest for both pistol and rifle (.223 mainly).

For lead, I've used Red River, lasercast and Missouri Bullets. The Red River and Missouri Bullets I have had the best luck with. I've recently found I like round nose bullets better than SWC bullets in the .45acp just because they are more forgiving. There, thats my daily revelation.

Well that's a pretty broad question,
For my muzzleloaders 100% lead home cast round ball.
For CF rifle it's all about purpose,
plinking and range practice; Hornady spbt are cheap and fly well
serious target; Seirra hpbt Match
Hunting,,depends on what,,Nolser v-max--Nosler Accubond--Barnes TSX
I got some loads for Sierra 45-50 grn spfb that work for squrill in the 223, but if I wanna reach out and touch something I like the BT' spitzers

I don't mind spending more for a premuim bullet If I have a reason to use it.

I've been using a lot of Montana Gold bullets for my pistol loads. I've also got a pretty good supply of Hornady XTP's in a variety of calibers.
