Casting

Postby North Star Packer on Sat Mar 06, 2010 7:55 am

Any one having problems buying Wheel Weights? I went to 3 tire shops yesterday and they refused to sell because they can only sell to wholesalers. Lead is too hazerous for the general public to use.
What happens when we no longer can buy WW for casting. I have been able to find some small shops that I can buy from, but I am sure this will soon stop as they can not use lead WW after the 1st of the year.
If anyone has a good source and want to share, I would appricate hearing from you.

I've got 100 lbs of range reclaim lead that has been melted and fluxed into 10 lb ingots and willing to part with.

Just keep asking, they are hit or miss. I have only had a couple provide wheel weights, the others refuse. Most of my casting has moved to a pure lead and tin mix. I know local ranges will sell the recllaimed lead it was $0.50 per lb last time I checked.

I've been looking at wholesale lead buying (for tackle manufacturing) any way if anyone is interested on a possible group purchase I'll be ordering a couple hundred pounds in the next month or so. The cost is $2.00 per pound shipped. Hopefully by the fall I'll be ordering over a thousand pounds at a time that brings the price down to under $1.50 per pound. This is manufacturing quality lead as I won't use wheel weights because I sell to retailers. If anyone is interested let me know.

Just an FYI on lead prices. If you go down to the recycling place on Concord South of 52, they will pay you a measly 5 cents a pound for your scrap lead. Their SELLING price these days is 38-40 cents per pound, which is what the guy at the Wolf's Den has to pay to get his lead to make bullets, and he's willing to pay anbody else that price if they have scrap lead. I have about 600 1 pound ingots of pure lead water pipes from when they dug up the streets in Merriam park, and I'm going to hang onto it for now.

Not that you need to reveal your trade secrets, but what do you guys (people that cast their own) offer to pay for say, a 5 gallon bucket full of wheel weights?

Next time I go home to Iowa, maybe I'll inquire to some of the "good ole boys" that I know in the tire shops there. Free is good and preferred obviously, but what would you guys be comfortable paying to actually buy such an amount? or by the pound?

That's funny, I just got 300lbs of WW from Iowa last summer. I split it with a loading/casting buddy. We paid $0.20 per LB on the WW.
