.223 or 5.56 advise...

Postby RobD on Wed Jul 14, 2010 11:54 am

Now that I've got a new caliber in my repertoire, I need some advised on brands/suppliers...

What brands should I look out for? I would like reloadable cases, and don't mind if its a little dirty, I'm pretty diligent in my cleaning.

I usually get my ammo at walmart, so that is convenient, I also make the occasional Fleet Farm run. I'm not opposed to buying online if it's worth it.

Thanks!

I've used all three of these vendors with excellent results. AIM is the one I have used the most.

Precision Cartridge in Indiana makes some pretty good re-manufactured stuff that's fairly cost effective and available in pretty large quantities. We're not affiliated with them in any way, but I've bought from them in the past personally.

Surplusammo.com has about the best deals. So does palmeto armory (sp?). I have ordered from surplus and have been pleased with prices any quality.

I have been shooting mostly .223 PMC Bronze, which Cabela's currently has for $6.49 a box. Palmetto State armory will sell you it for 309/1000.

Fleet Farm has normally has a good stock of 5.56 in both Winchester and Federal American Eagle, both for around $9 per box. The Federal I bought all had Lake City brass.

Obviously make sure that your chamber is 5.56 before buying any of it. My AR is 5.56, but for the price and quality, I plan on buying just the PMC.

Try a few. Although I still use it for fun target practice my Kel-Tec SU16C does not like Federal 223 accuracy wise. Likes Hornady the best but works fine with 5.56 military also. Like less than 1 inch at 100 yards (H) little over 1 inch (M193) compared tojust short of 3 inches with the Federal. Locked into rest to eliminate any human error.
