What did you do for the bars on the window? Is that steel? How did you attach it to your house to make sure it withstood someone kicking it in / blowing apart the wood? I want to do this to my room but wondered if lag bolting it into the studs is good enough or even a good idea.

I used standard steel flat bar, I think it's 1.5 X .25 inch and attached it to my window jam studs using high strenghth 6 inch touques headed screws. Drill pilot holes at least 3 inches deep so that the studs won't split. It's not Fort Knox but it's better than nothing.

It may not be an issue here, depending on the location of your room within the layout of your home, but for anyone considering 'burglar bars': If need be, could you, or other residents(children/ elderly) break OUT, should the need occur?

Yeah not a factor for me. No one "occupies" the lower level of my house. It's a split and we are currently working on the whole lower level. Being that it's a ground floor split I'm more concerned with keeping people out that being trapped.

Once I'm kicked out of this room though I don't know where I'm going to go. My new "office" will be upstairs however I don't want to put my gun safe on the 2nd level and would like to keep all things firearms in one room.

I'll cross that bridge when it comes though.

It's not a bedroom, so I am really not concerned about an escape plan... I wish the window wasn't there at all but the natural light is nice and the view in my back yard is great. I just have to remember to close the blinds every time I open them.
