I want to get started in reloading. What to get?

A place to discuss calibers, ammunition, and reloading

It is really not about the money. I have a big pile of rough-cut butternut sitting in my garage that I want to see how it machines before tackling a bigger project with it. My wife is out of wood chips for the rabbit and is threatening to buy some if I don't plane some wood soon. My son has been asking to work with me on some woodworking projects. These darn blocks will cost me $20 each in time and effort but my wife will have her chips, my son will get to make some things with his dad, and I will smile every time I pick one up for decades (long after the butternut tree has gone the way of the American chestnuts due to the cankers that is killing them all).

Plus they "cost" me nothing.

Really is similar to reloading. I don't really think it will be cheaper than buying .223 at $.28 each or 9mm at $.18 each for brass cased. I will be shooting my own stuff. Plus when the UN decides that we need to serialize and register every bullet and case (for the children), I will just keep working through my stockpile of components.

The one thing you really need to get before start reloading is a 2nd job! Once you start getting into it deep it gets extremely expensive, you will likely develop a thirst for fancy tools and components much the same way a crack head craves his next fix, places like Gun Stop and Midsouth Shooters will take all your money, you will start trolling forums like 6mmBR looking for the next fancy die set that will shrink your neck runout from .001" to .0005", it’s an incredibly vicious disease and strikes fast and hard. :D

+1 When Tutz was going to school and we were broke, I actually had to STOP reloading, because it made me shoot more, and I just kept buying more equipment. At that time I had a couple thousand 357 loads and plenty of 243AI and 6mmBR. One of these days I have to set everything up in the new house, but I can buy pistol cheaper than I can buy components, so I don't even load pistol rounds any longer.

And once you get loading, the forums at 6mmBR and Predatormasters have some extremely knowledgeable guys that are more than willing to answer all your questions.

I second this, I think by the end of the day tomorrow I will have more invested in reloading equipment and supplies then guns. But it is fun.

I could use a loading stand for an 1851 Confederate navy cap and ball revolver if you are looking to make some wood chips. I could do it here, just don't have a shop to work in.

The chips were made over the weekend when I planed some rough lumber. Wife is happy. If you e-mail me a sketch or dimensions of what you want cut, I would be happy to make it for you.
