Dented cartridges- safe?

Postby 45Badger on Sun Sep 25, 2011 3:12 pm

I've got a handful of dented .223 cartridges. I'm a cheapskate that hates to throw anything away, so I'd like ot fire them instead of tearing down for components. They chamber in my 700P (heavy barrel) .223. Safe to shoot? I think yes, and figure the expanding gases should re-form the cases. Any engineers here that can verify or correct my guess?

we'd take the double feeds off the firing lines and then the safeties/range officers would fire them after the range was empty. Only time we wouldn't is if the round would not chamber.

As long as they chamber easy, there is no issue.

I've put quite a few dented rounds down range through an AR without issue

i've commonly found minor dents just below the shoulder on .223 brass. It fireforms, long as there isn't any substantial damage like a crack in the brass.

to date I still have both eyes and all fingers and toes.

If they chamber, I bet you will find that firing them will quickly remove any dents that were in the case.

That's how I get rid of the dents in mine.

As long as they chamber, shoot'em !
I have the same problem with Fedral 45 acp nickel cases, they dent up just from loading the magazines ! {Flimsy}
The dents do blow out when you shoot them so it's not that bad. It's a quality control problem with federals nickel plated cases, they are just too thin !
Hornady and Speer on the other hand just about get scratched let alone dents ! It's why I switched to their products. I don't like to leave my magazines loaded for more than a month at a time and everytime you load up with HST or Hydra-Shok for example, you get dented cartridges. Remington and Winchesters Nickel cases aren't too bad, but they aren't as strong as Hornady or Speer. Brass cases on the other hand I had no problems with from any manufacturer.
People who are against guns will never have true freedom !
