Beretta 92 and crimped reloaded ammo

Postby mccandmatt on Fri Jan 13, 2012 6:50 pm

I just recently picked up a 92FS off of here, and I read through the manual like always (when manual is present) and I noticed in the ammo section that there is no warranty if using reload (Standard with most gun), dont care about the warranty it is well out of that time frame. But it did say that if reloaded ammo is being used to not use any crimped ammo... Is this just simply them playing the whole "Cover Your A$$" in case Mr. Moron puts an extreme crimp on the bullet or not? Im just wondering after talking with Dawson on crimping, I make sure to crimp my ammo.

Thanks, just want to make sure there was not something funny with the Beretta's and crimped ammo.

SHHHHHHH don't tell either my PX4 or 92FS if that is the case cause they haven't noticed yet 8-)

Could be a taper vs. roll crimp thing. I'm sure there's been someone who roll crimped, blew up their gun, then complained about it.

Could also be "Don't reload star crimped blank ammo"

Who knows. It probably lost something in the translation from Italian.

Is this the part of the manual you're talking about?

Warning If using reloaded cartridges containing solid lead bullets, take the
following precautions:
- DO NOT use any ammunition on which the case mouth is CRIMPED
into the bullet.
- Make sure the bullets are of the right caliber size according to
international specifications (C.I.P., S.A.A.M.I., etc.).
- Avoid the use of bullets having sharp contour step close to case
mouth.
- Lead bullets have a tendency to cause bore leading which may
dramatically increase the discharge pressure.
- Make sure to remove all chamber and bore lead accumulation after
each shooting.
- DO NOT ever shoot cartridges with jacketed bullets through a barrel
previously fired with lead bullets before the bore is thoroughly
deleaded.
- Repeated reloading will structurally weaken the case head/web
section which may result in case rupture.

Sounds like it's all about the hazards of possible lead fowling fouling.

Just stick to FMJ or jacketed bullets and your gun will thank you.

I'm with jspace on this. Sounds like somebody used lead bullets and put a good roll crimp on them in a lube groove, and then God knows what happened. All 9mm rounds are taper crimped, and you DEFINITELY want a taper crimp on those bullets to keep them from backing into the case upon feeding. I've shot thousands of rounds of 9mm ammo with cast bullets in my Browning, for nearly 4 decades, and never had a problem. If some idiot blew themselves up by using roll crimped cast bullets in a Beretta, then that's discoverable evidence if a second idiot does the same thing, and to protect yourself you HAVE to publish a warning or you're screwed.

Yeah you should be fine with lead, just use a stab crimp instead of a roll crimp.

Found this comment on another Forum.

Now if you own a Beretta 92 the manual does specifically say DO NOT SHOOT LEAD bullets. The rifling in a Beretta 92 is not polygonal its land and groove!!
And when I shot my Penn Bullet reloads in my 92FS compact, The rifling would have lead strips hanging from it after 25 rounds:what: At that point the Bullets would be hitting the target sideways:what: :what: at 50 feet.
SCARRY it was. I dont know of any other handgun that does this and it has conventional rifling!!!! I think its because the Beretta has a very fast twist rate, too fast for lead. :?:

Use a harder alloy similar to Dardas Cast Bullets, and TAPER Crimp only, IMO.
