I might suggest useing a brass rod to drive the slug thru the barrel, I have seen wooden ones break and possibly cause injuries or jamb the wooden rod in the barrel.

I used a curtain rod with an empty brass casing over the end once and it worked fine and was cheaper than the brass rod of that length. Alum are available but still not as cheap as the curtain rod. Just make sure the end is covered with a brass casing.
