Winchester primers.

Postby sgruenhagen44 on Mon Oct 22, 2012 8:45 am

Anyone have light strikes with winchester primers? With my Ruger SRH I have been having some light strike issues. I buddy of mine told me to switch to CCI, which I will once I run out of winchesters. I probably have only had 4 light strikes out of over 500 rounds. Not a big issue I know. Maybe it's the gun, cuz I don't recall this problem with my Ruger SBH. Although I don't think my SRH has fired any factory ammo yet. My super SBH was quite a bit of both. Either way, just curious about other peoples experience with winchester primers. I hope on opener I hear a bang and not a double click from my revo! Yes, I could buy factory but I can't afford that right now.

CCI primers are the hardest primrs you can buy. If you are concerned about light strikes you should stay away from them. I have had no issues with Winchester primers. Federal primers seem to be the softess. It could also be an issue wth the gun rather than the primers.

Yesterday I went to bills and shot about 80 rounds. My second shot was a light strike and then no problems after that. I feel like switching primers should be my first step beofre I condemn the gun. Like I said before, I don't think I have ever shot factory ammo out of it. Maybe Some of them were not seated properly, who knows. So CCIS are hard huh? Anyone else use CCIS?

Make sure your firing pin/spring area is clean. Could be some crud built up?

If there's been any work done on the "trigger", they probly lightened the mainspring!

If not, send it in to Ruger! ;)

I'd go with the Blackhawk ... but then, I'd go with the Blackhawk, anyhow!

Last time I sent a gun back to Ruger ... it was a Blackhawk ... that screw that holds the ejector-rod housing on? ... ya, it sheared off! ... got the gun back 7 days after I sent it! ... I doubt that's normal?! :? ... jest sayin'

Otherwise, ya might load up a few rounds with some Federal 150's?! ;)

Been using Winchester for over 25 years. No problems. They are mid range for primer sensitivity. Federal, most sensitive, CCI lest sensitive. Winchester in the middle.

Are you seating the primers fully? Do they go off the second time you try to fire them? If the primers are not seated fully, they will move when struck and not fire. The second time you try to fire them, they will usually go off because they have been fully seated in the primer pocket. This has been the problem with 90 % of the primer problems I have had. I did have problem with an HK USP where the firing pin hole would become filled with residue after about 500 rounds and would need to be cleaned.
Because I care, I carry.

Sorry! ... when ya referred to yer Blackhawk, I never figured ya mighta got rid of it?! :o ... never heard of no one gettin' rid of a Blackhawk, 'fore?! :? (not 'less they were replacing it ... with 'nother Blackhawk, 'course!)

Ya won't get what ya paid ... but I bet most any shop'd take that Redhawk in trade against a NIB Blackhawk ... $0 outta yer pocket! Image

I was going to say this, but westhope said it better than I would have. ;)

I had one Win primer issue today at the range, solid hit with my P89 and no ignition. Second hit set it off, no issues with the 74 others I shot. It is possible I didn't seat fully, as mentioned above.

Ditto on the primer seating - been there done that and it was also with Winchester.
