Buying used equipment

Postby xracer390 on Sun Jan 20, 2013 5:02 pm

A friend picked up a bunch of stuff and wants to sell it. Can anyone identify what is pictured and can it be used for pistol? I know the original owner of this stuff only did riffle and shotgun. Value ? The large wooden ammo box is full of dies. There is also a bullet puller and a re sizer in there somewhere along with various casings and bullets. Thanks BB

The item on the right and in the second picture is a Mec shotgun reloader. The O press looks like a Lyman single stage. The third picture is a base for a powder thrower, looks like it is missing the canaster on the top.

Looks like you might have the workings for pistol, but everything needs a good cleaning to determin how good it is, you have to get the rust off first.

Apart from the powder measure, which is questionable, I don't see ANYTHING there worth money at all, and a miscellaneous box of dies is questionable unless they're complete sets, AND they have a carbide size die. Considering the rust, this stuff wasn't taken care of, so I'd give it a pass. A Lee Perfect Powder measure is $24.99 at Midway, brand new. A Lee Deluxe carbide 4 die pistol set is $39.99 from Midway in 45 ACP. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a complete pistol die set used from that collection, because a new Lee carbide die is only $20.

In the first picture the press on the left looks like a Pacific shotgun reloading press from the late 60s to early 70s. Probably a DL-155 like mine. Note the automatic primer feed on its left. Note also that the clear plastic powder and shot reservoirs are missing. They might be in another box of stuff that typically comes with old reloaders for sale. If not they can be replaced, I've recently seen new ones on eBay. The manual is available from the Hornady web site. My DL-155 is still making shotgun shells for me. Manual here: http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/manuals-discontinued/shotshell-reloading/Pacific-155-Shotshell-Reloader.pdf

Some history; If you read the silver label on the press it probably says something like "Pacific, division of Hornady" on it. This DL-155 press was made during the transition period after Hornady bought Pacific, changing the color from blue to red. Any reference to Pacific was dropped by the mid-70s. More info: http://pacificreloaders.awardspace.com/Pacific%20DL-155.htm

The item in the right of the first picture and in the second picture is a MEC (Mayville Engineering Company) single-stage shotgun reloader of some kind. I'm not very familiar with them. The shot and powder reservoirs are not mounted, but could be in a box. Spare parts are easy to come by.

The third picture is a powder measure without its resevoir mounted on a bench stand. Don't know the make or model.

The last item pictured looks like a Hornady 00-7 single-stage press. Note the dual link arms connecting the toggle to the ram. The 0-7 press only had one. With some clean up this could give good service. It's an 'O' press which is stronger than 'C' presses so you could reload rifle as well as pistol cartridges on it. And it has the primer catch tray. The manual is available from the Hornady web site. I am using the predecessor to the 'Ox-7' press series, (the 'Super C') and it's still going strong. Manual here: http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/manuals-discontinued/metalic-reloading/presses/metallic_reloading_007_press.pdf

All that being said, the single-stage press could be cleaned up to reload pistol cartridges. The powder measure needs a resevoir to hold powder, but appears to be adjustable and could probably be used for pistol reloading. There is some rust, so it might take some TLC to put them back in shape. If you're interested in a project, it could be worthwhile. Equipment like this can last a lifetime if you take care of it. ;)

The Mec shotshell reloader is worth maybe $30.00 in the shape that it is in.
The only thing there that would be worth anything is the powder measure. I looks like a Redding which I own and it is very high quality. You would have to order the plastic top however, and who knows what kind of shape that it is in. They sell new for around $150.00 but if you would check ebay, you would be able to get them for about half the price.
It looks like someone really neglected this old stuff which is a shame.
Except for the powder measure, I wouldn't take the stuff if it were given to me.

I have a DL-155 which is what the press on the left appears to be. I would be interested in buying that one and maybe the powder measure if he's willing to split them up and ship them? If interested, let me know please. Thanks!
