9mm spm instead of sp primer...?

Postby gunther274 on Fri Jan 25, 2013 12:30 pm

Going to start loading 9mm soon, got a couple pounds of universal I intend to use. 125 grain cast bullet. The real question is, can a guy use spm primers instead of regular pistol primers? As most of you know standard pistol primers are almost impossible to come by. Substitute and work up as normal? Any opinions?

I wouldnt recomend using magnum primers in 9mm. I was able to grab a brick of standard small pistol primers today at scheels so they are available when your lucky. anyway Im sure someone with more reloading expiernce than me will pop up and tell you the scientific reasons why loading magnum primers will be a bad thing.

Well, I just loaded 150 rounds of 9mm using Tula sp mag primers.
Load no. 1, 3.9 gr. Bullseye 124 gr. plated
Load no. 2, 4 gr. Bullseye 124 gr. plated
Load no. 3, 4.1 gr. Bullseye 124 gr. plated

These loads are 10- 15% below max. I don't anticipate a problem, been loading for 60 years.

Start low, work up. No issue as long as you start low.

Interchangeable with slight or mods. For many years boxes said good for both from winchester
