Even if true, it would only take 10 million gun owners buying either 1000 loaded rounds or 1000 primers to wipe out a years production. I don't know about you but 1000 is about half a years supply for me.
I will never apologize for being an American.

When I was seriously trying to improve my pistol shooting, 1000 was about half a months supply.

How many hunters buy 1 or 2 boxes of 30-06 or .270 a year and then blast away at deer opener then repeat year after year? Most people on this forum (including me for sure) are on one end of the ammo buying bell curve not in the middle.

There's 88.8 guns per 100 people. I'd think we're probably well above 1/3 of the population given those numbers.

Hrmn. 276.2 million guns in the united states. Thats alot of ammo.

My kid technically can't own a gun, but he's got two of them.

I looked and was surprised to find out most estimates put ownership between 40-50%. I just know thinking of all my friends and neighbors, I don't think 50% of my friends and family are gun owners, and the vast majority of those are conservatives. But numbers are higher than I would have guessed

I don't advertise personally. None of my neighbors likely know I own a gun, and not all friends and relatives do.

If by "gun owner", you mean "has a gun in a closet", I'd be very surprised if the number were as low as 50%.

State-wide surveys indicate that even in the most anti-gun regions, there are guns in more than 25% of households. In the more pro-gun regions, the numbers are above 65%.

And we know that there are a fair number of people who don't think of themselves as gun owners, who have an old gun or two in an attic that they've not touched in decades, and that a fair number of those who do think of themselves as gun owners don't trust pollsters, and will disproportionately refuse to answer, or out-right lie, on this question. Both of which would suggest that the surveys under-report the truth.

In fact, if you track gun sales and imports against polls of gun ownership, from year to year, there's only one conclusion that can be drawn. The changes in the survey resutls track with anti-gun rhetoric in teh media, and don't track at all with gun sales. The only reasonable explanation is that a lot of gun owners lie to pollsters, when asked whether they own guns.

I'm the one who's been buying up all the ammo. I'm hoarding it and shooting it at an almost supernatural rate. My apologies to anyone I may have inadvertently affected with my actions, but I have an addiction to feed. So there!

I gave up on buying.

I am reloading now with components purchased between 1994 and 2011.
Interesting looking at some of the prices marked on component boxes. Like $9.72 for Hornady 140 XTP's in 357. Or rifle primers at $14 per thousand, or powder at $9 per pound. But other components purchased during 2008 and later show Obama's scare results too.

I just have lots of time on my hands with no cash flow - want to buy the 30 Carbine and 357 Ruger Blackhawks for sale here on forum but can't justify the expenditure now. I once had revolvers like these and others with "Made in 200th Year of American Liberty" but entire collection of 34 guns were stolen and have never turned up.

Yep, was at Cabela’s in Rogers yesterday morning and couldn’t believe all of the empty ammo shelves. Not a single round of .380, 9mm or .45 target ammo to be found. The guys at the gun counter were still busy selling handguns and there must have been 20 guys looking for ammunition. Sure glad I started stocking up on ammo just after Obummer was re-elected!

I haven't seen a box of 9mm anywhere in weeks. Just browsed A1Ammo.com, which is nice because I can Will Call there - just down the street from me, but they're out of stock dang near everything but personal defense rounds. This is getting ridiculous.

Like Ron said, all FF has is Winchester .40S&W in 50s and 100s (which is fine, because I have one of those) but I'm very low on 9mm. Got plenty of .40 now though.

Soon enough the excitement will subside. The shelves will restock, and things will be back to semi normal.

I say semi normal because if the gun ban doesn't go through, I see the government attempting to punish gun owners another way. Likely taxes on new purchases, regulation on reloading (licensing, limits on power/primers).

I know it might not be popular, and I'm just spit balling here.. but why wouldn't the government require a permit to purchase ammo? We all know criminals find illegal ways to get guns, but that doesn't stop a gang banger in Chicago from buying a gun out of a trunk from going to GM, Walmart, or wherever to get ammo.

It would be hard not to agree that concivted criminals who cannot buy guns, should not be allowed to purchase ammo.

I'd almost rather see that step first than any attempt on a ban. It doesn't make law abiding citizens criminals over night. It makes criminals that own guns illegally guilty of yet another crime. If they get arrested for ammo purchase, one could reasonably execute a legal search of their property for the guns the ammo was to be used in.

Hopefully the availability / price of firearms and ammunition does return to semi-normalcy in the very near future; however, as long as the political atmosphere continues to move along its present trajectory, I fear we are never again going to see pre-2012 availability.
