Anyone use Clays Universal powder?

Postby benny on Sat Mar 09, 2013 9:09 pm

I bought the clays universal powder because I can use it in my trap loads and I seen it can also be used in metalic aplications too.
Any one use it to reload rifle or handgun loads??

Some people have used it for reloading handgun calibers saying that it is like Unique in charge weight and volume but that it is cleaner than Unique. I myself have never used it so I don't know its characteristics.

I plan to reload for .38sp,.357mag,.44 sp, and .44 mag both pistol and rifle loads. The Hodgman web sight said that Universal would load fine for those calibers plus my trap loads.

Hodgdon's Universal is the primary powder for all my non-magnum pistol loads (.380, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .357 SIG, .357 Mag., .44 Mag and .454 Casull). I've been using it ever since I started reloading, and find it to be extremely clean burning and consistent in performance. The powder's flakes are fairly large, making the occasional unintended spill easy to clean up.

Isn't Universal a little too fast burning for rifle loads?

Burn rate for universal leans more toward pistol and shotgun applications. It meters poorly in the Dillon, so make allowances in your applications . It, too, is very affordable, just a few bucks more than Unique.

The Hodgman site only has recipies for the pistol calibers used in rifles, I couldn't find any info for rifle loads like the .30-06 or .243 so I will use a different powder for those.

Benny email me and I might be able to get you some data from my online data site. If anything is available for it?

U clays works fine in my Dillon measure.

Its a little smoky with some lead bullet lubes but doesn't dirty a gun any worse than anything else. Great versatile powder.

I have used it in 45acp and it was fine. As someone else mentioned, the charge weights will be similar to unique but cleaner. It metered thru my redding #3 measure ok.
