Reloading and airport security

Postby DoxaPar on Sun Jun 23, 2013 12:21 pm

I'm traveling via plane soon and realized a few nights ago that the shelves holding all of our luggage is just a few feet from my reloading bench.

It made me wonder, if any powder dust particulars landed on my luggage am I going to have some explaining to do?

I've been checked before and I know they use those systems to check for explosives powder.

That's funny. I have a similar situation, my luggage is in same area as reloading. Haven't had an issue as of yet. I could see it being a possible problem though

I have never had an issue even when my backpack was at an indoor range the day before.

Reloading and airport security

I've had issue when I used a duffle at the range and then traveled with it.

Only reason I had issue is I was the random search winner and the swab picked up powder. Brief explanation and I was on my way.

Used to work with artillery systems. Our field service, certified "powder monkey" would get stopped regularly at airports if he encountered a sniffer. Typically a few questions, and a closer look, and he would be on his way.

I've frequently gone on flights within two hours of being at a range and it's never been a problem.

Back when I was dumber, I used to carry in my work backpack. I was swiped for powder twice; first time no issue, second time they just asked me if I knew why my bag would have set off the alarm. I showed them my permit, said I normally carried a firearm in there, they took a quick look through my bag and sent me on my way. In fact, the TSA agent cracked a joke "good to know this thing actually works" (referring to his machine)

I used to use my range bag as my carry-on all the time and I was never stopped longer than the random sniffer selection. Passed every time w/o issue. Ironically my partner from work would get picked and never made it through a check cleanly.

I make sure to have a separate bag for range than the one I use for travel.

The range bag is always picking up empties and stray goodies. I would rather avoid any hassle if I didn't get it sorted out.

I think there was an incident of this not to long ago. Someone left a loaded magazine or some loose rounds in a backpack and it caused them some grief at the checkpoints.

If I recall correctly, the man was from MN and in the middle of his return, having passed through security several times on his trip, he found a cartridge in his carryon that had been there the whole time in dome nook or cranny. He went to the TSA to get rid of it. He missed his connecting flight while they sorted it out.

I have deliberately shot just before going to check in to see if anything would register and never had a problem. I wouldn't know about my luggage being exposed to residue but I always check it. And it usually has ammo and a firearm in it so it should get flagged. Of course, it always get the special treatment thanks to TSA.
