If you are a diligent and focused shooter and you are prepared for a squib. Dont pull them just shoot carefully. Keep a wood dowel or brass rod with you so you can knock out a bullet. Fyi bare lead knocks out WAY easier than jacketed bullets.

Main thing is you detect EVERY squib and you remedy the malfunction properly. If you can't do that 100% then yes pull them.

This is not for everyone but those who know their realistic limits. I once shot a new friends reloads. Found three squibs in 900 rounds that day. I don't shoot with him anymore... but I also believe he has not improved his reloading habits one bit since then.

I googled squib and went to Images and there were some Ugly sawed-in-half barrels with 5-6 bullets jammed in:

Looks like the damage comes from the bullets AFTER the first one :(

Yep a squib doesn't hurt the gun at all. It's the second bullet slamming into it.

Hey Guys,

I've been away for a while, but I thought the "Powder Room" section was supposed to be for female related issues, like holsters that match purses and shoes. While I'm sure the ladies will be interested in how guys do bone head stuff, shouldn't we move this to reloading?

Then again, there are a lot of girls responding to the OP.

seriously? All any of us do (when bored at work, or between chores around the house, or whatever) is click on new posts. The only time I know what sub something is in, is when I'm the op. But if it'll help you fall asleep tonight, then it really should be moved.

Well, Big Dog has managed to set the bar as far as safe progressive loading by positioning himself so he can see inside of EVERY EFFEN case!! I wasn't aware for certain this was possible, but it's worth the effort to catch that ONE squib, or worse yet a double load.

Being a crusty old fart, I continue to charge 50 or 100 cases in a block, and then wheel my chair under the overhead light and peer down every case to see if they're all the same. I have used some powders that did not meter well (thankfully they're now obsolete) but you still have to be on your guard for mystery objects in the powder. Ladybugs that flew into the measure or canister can definitely "BUGGER UP" :P your powder measuring, and I'm mot so sure some medium sized dust balls in the powder can't do the same. For whatever reason, you can have an odd charge just decide to rear its ugly head. With ball powders the chance is smaller, but you can't always use those, and depending on the flake size and metering opening in the measure, a very occasional powder bridge could occur, and there's always static electricity potential more in the winter than the summer.

Bottom line - you ain't sure about the uniformity of your powder charges unless you look at ALL of them to make sure some funky 1 time in 1,000 event didn't happen. Yes, it's a PITA, but much less so than a rapid fire mag dump with a squib halfway down the stack.

Doc,

Thanks for posting about the squib, It is a good reminder for the rest of us. Dismantling bullets is no fun, I should now, I had to do a few this weekend. :?

Wouldn't having a powder check system on a progressive catch this?

Define "powder check system". If it means an "out of powder indicator", then the answer is NO, an empty powder indicator will only tell you if you are out of powder, and will offer NO CLUE if you had powder bridging, a powder goober, a dustball, or a ladybug in the powder. Plus there's the whole "jam in the progressive loader" scenario, where a station hangs up and you have to re-sequence the stations. That' as a matter of fact, is one of the best ways to wind up with a double charge in a large case like a 38 special.
