White / greasy substance on the lead of my .45LC ?

Postby bluto on Fri Jan 31, 2014 3:49 pm

I have never seen this before but never shot .45LC so not sure if its a corrosion inhibitor or ?

If it is supposed to be on there, do I wipe it off before using ?

Thanks .

That is normal corrosion of pure lead bullets.
Wipe it off if you want, but it won't hurt anything.

If it is greasy/slick/smooth, it could be bullet lube. What ever it is, it isn't going to hurt anything.
Hornady makes swaged lead bullets and lubes them with a wax emulsion and then tumbles them in micro-mica so they don't stick together.

greasy? I only have a .22 but this eley target stuff I got feels like clown paint and really makes a mess(if you touch them, not of the gun). the bullet doesn't hardly even feel solid. those look like they might have a litlle wax or whatever but who can say from a picture.

I'm pretty sure its more propellants that don't burn clean causing fouling than bullets themselves?

I'm pretty new to 'guns' too so what do I know. if they do cause an issue that makes them unworthy for reliable defense or use at all don't get more. I think the only way to know is to try? if it does jam or something remember to stay safe with muzzle direction and whatnot instead of freaking out :)
