What Kind of Rounds are These?

Postby bocag18 on Mon Mar 10, 2014 11:24 am

So I got these 30-30 rounds at the Mankato gun show thinking they were wadcutters, I showed them to my dad and he said they were blanks, I then showed them to a man at the Wells gun show who said they were flares made in the 70s and 80s. Needless to say I am slightly confused so any light that could be shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

It looks to me like someone loaded some flat based cast bullets backwards.

Is the neck of the cartridge bent in the bottom photo or is it just the way the cartridge is being held?
I will never apologize for being an American.

Karlyn Flare

They sell on gun auctions for around $5 each. Made in the 80's if memory serves (and it sometimes does not) Google it by name for some reference pictures etc.

Any sort of packaging to go with them that gives any clues? It sort of looks like the bullet is oxidized lead from the photo and could very well be a wadcutter of some sort... though I've heard of all sorts of crazy things including people pulling rifle bullets and inserting them backwards to increase the terminal effects at short range (effectively turning an FMJ into a giant soft point)... pulling the bullet to take a look might be your only option though I don't know if it is some sort of special flare round that it's entirely safe to use one of the "oops hammer" style tools for the job?

Out of curiosity, what would one use a wadcutter bullet out of a 30-30 for, some sort of cowboy action/target shooting?

No packaging, just 6 loose rounds. I talked to a young guy at Scheels who said he thought they were for cowboy action shooting, though I'm not sure how well wadcutters would feed in a tube magazine. The guy at gander mt. straight up said he had no idea (I applauded him for his honesty).

Looks like flares, if the "bullets" are actually made of aluminum and not lead. I have had these before and would not recommend shooting them, they are notorious for the flare burning inside the barrel rather then outside

if you do shoot them make sure it isn't at something that you can start on fire. Have shot them b4 in 270 and not had a problem with them lighting up in the barrel. In fact they go a ways before lighting up.

Oh, come on.... Now what fun is that?
