454 Casull shot loads for 410 Contender

Postby SIGP240 on Tue Jun 03, 2014 7:17 pm

I want to venture from reloading WAA410 on the VersaMEC. I never had that much luck using 444 Matlin cases, so wondering does anybody have a shot load recommendation for 454 Casull? The Contender should be able to handle it. Are there shot capsules for 45 caliber like there are for 44 Mag? Would appreciate a jump start to get some ammo going.

I'm a little confused. Seeing as there are countless derringers and also the S&W Judge line that shoot both 45LC and 410 shotshells, I can't imagine why you couldn't do the exact same thing with a 454 Casull Contender. I did this with 444 Marlin cases in my Contender decades ago, but that was a 44 Mag contender and not a 454 Casull or 45 LC contender.

I too am interested in a few snake type loads in 454 using either h110 or titegroup. As to the op in your contender I won't see any advantage other than brass strength using 454 over the 45 colt because if the contender is chambered properly it wont chamber a 454 as they are .100 longer than the colt. So you would have to trim the brass down anyways just to get it to chamber, essentially having the same capacity as the colt.

Now I'm even more confused. Why would you want to develop a shot load for a 454 Casull that met the max OAL for a 454 load when you could just shove a .410 round in there and go to town with no muss and no fuss? Either way, the rifling will take its toll on the shot, but a .410 wad would probably protect it better than a plastic capsule that breaks open when it's fired.

My Comteder has a 3" chamber. 454 is basically a magnum 45 Long Colt. The barrel has a choke that cancels the rifling's spin. 444 Marlin fire forms to 410. I just don't find it at the ranges here like I did in MI. I find 454 case fairly often. I want to take advantage of recycling the cases into shot shells. I bought fresh
8# jugs of H110 and WW296 last week because they were cheap. 45 LC dies should work. I may start by making an over powder die punch and cut from old 12 gauge card wad. My shot payload may only be 1/4 to 3/8 oz to have room to seal the case mouth with melted crayon. The judge revolver and the governor revolver do not appeal to me. well they are is trendy home defense weapons, not hunting guns The contender is a well-known squirrel getter, due to the 10 inch barrel with 3" 410 # 2 shot loads. I have even shot trap with it.
