More Random Fleet Farm Observations

Postby dleong on Fri Aug 22, 2014 9:03 pm

Just returned from yet another animal crackers run to the Lakeville Fleet Farm. While I was there, I swung through the reloading aisle and made the following completely random and possibly pointless observations:

1. Projectiles were in plentiful supply, but prices look like they have taken a bit of a jump. For example, the 100-count boxes of Hornady 45 Cal. 250 gr. XTPs have gone from $25 to $27, and the 45 Cal. 240 XTP Mags from $30 to $31.50.

2. Primers were also in abundant supply, but I wasn't paying attention to prices, and do not know if they've gone up too. All I saw were individual 100-primer trays on the shelf; I can't recall if they ever had the 1000-primer bricks available.

3. The twin rows of empty 1 lb. powder canisters screwed to the shelves certainly made for a pretty display. If we're lucky, they'll actually have stock of the powders within the next decade or two.

4. If you are in urgent need of some new 454 Casull brass, rest assured that Fleet Farm will always have stock of the Winchester-branded ones at this store, at the low, low price of $80.49 per 100-count bag. And I can only surmise it is a hugely popular caliber to handload from the ample stock that Fleet Farm always seems to have on hand.

I don't get it, who buys primers by the 100?

Yeah, I've mentioned that to the staff at the FF closer to me, but that's how they always have them. They're all taped shut, too. It's annoying. Also, last I looked, they wanted about $4 per 100 for small pistol primers. Last time I actually bought from them, it was $3.19 IIRC, so the price has definitely risen. I keep checking for pistol powder, but it seems like all they have on any kind of regular basis is rifle powder. The employees always say they hope to have some in "soon," but that they don't know when/if it'll actually arrive. One of them has even asked what types I'm looking for, and I rattled off a whole list of stuff that would work for me. No way to know if that request made it anywhere useful, or if it would have any effect if it did, but at least the guy seemed to be trying...

That's kind of funny. The FF near me keeps their powder bottle display updated to reflect what they've actually got on hand. (I know this because I asked and scored 2 pounds of Unique as a result, but that was many months ago, and I haven't seen anything I could use since.)

I buy LRP by the 100. The only thing I load that uses them is 30-30 and 1000 primers would last me forever.

Yeah that .454 brass stock is most amusing. It will probably decompose before it is sold especially considering that Cabela's sells Starline by the 100 for about half FF's price. I think FF sells Win brass and their price IS in line with MSRP for that brand, but I'll take Starline for a lot less.

And to add to the issues at FF, I've yet to meet a salesperson in that dept who know what the heck (s)he was talking about. Granted it's not GS but still...

I just got back from visiting the Cabela's in Woodbury for the very first time. You're right--the 100-count bag of Starline 454 Casull brass is $42 over there...

(As an aside, I noticed that Cabela's prices on firearms, especially handguns, have essentially entered Gander territory.)

They're both roughly MSRP, right?

Close. And in the case of Gander, sometimes even above.

New in box MSRP +15% because it's already broken in for you, saving all that break-in ammo cost and range fees.

That's about right. The $1400 Lee-Enfield No 4 MK1 I saw at the one Gander is now marked down to a little over $1000.

It is nice to see someone got the sarcasm.

Oh, I was pretty sure you were being sarcastic there; just figured I'd play it cool and contribute to the sarcasm if you were, especially since my response would be the same if you weren't. :)

I just bought a package (100) of CCI450 small rifle magnum primers a couple weeks ago. I was working with a new powder and found a number of loads using the CCI450 primer in the recipe. My prior results with that powder and CCI400s weren't bad and I didn't really want to buy a brick of the magnums if they weren't going to do any better than the standards. As it was, I later went back and bought a brick of the magnums as the results were worth pursuing.

That being said, I would not enjoy buying all my primers in single packages of 100, that is for sure.
