IMR 4166?

Postby Bearcatrp on Fri Nov 28, 2014 3:29 pm

Saw gunstop had this as a new powder so picked up 1lb. From what I have read so far, good for 308, which I reload for. Anyone that has tried this care to comment on likes or dislikes? Grabbed 700-X and varget while I was there too.

It's so new, I had to google it, cause I'd never heard of it. The press release I found was from 10/20/14. I doubt anyone has spent any real time playing with it. He'll, I'd bet most haven't even seen a jug yet.

Do some loading, let us know how it goes!

Will do. Been using IMR 4064 but will load some of these up to see what its like. Trying to find load data now to find a good starting point.
This is what I found so far... http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle
Question though. Data chart shows for 24 inch barrel. Mine is a 16. Should I reduce some or just go with minimal and work up, keeping an eye on the brass for signs of to much powder?
I see what I punched in didn't stay with the link. I shoot 150 gr FMJ hornady and 168 gr A-Max hornady.

Start at Min, or 10% below max, and work up from there.

Pretty much all data sets are generated with 24-40" test barrels. That information is for reference only. Always start low and work up.

Barrel length has no bering on chamber pressure. The only difference you'll see with a shorter barrel is lower muzzle velocity.

Call the good folks at Quickload. They didn't have data for AutoComp powder for my 9x25 SSX, but they had received a "hint" from somebody about what 4166 is similar to. Seeing as I can't remember the conversation exactly, I'll let you get if from the original source.

I have been considering this powder for a while to replace Varget. But I have so much of the rifle stuff that I am going to wait until Summer when I can do proper testing. I wanted a small batch to do cold weather testing, but I want to buy that 8lb jug to keep it consistent if there any issues with this new powder.

Why would you ever want to replace Varget?

Only problem I find with varget is that, it does not meter well in my Dillon. But, I agree. Unless it meters better, "stick" to Varget.
