Why "nix" Magtech?

Postby Pat on Mon Aug 18, 2008 7:46 pm

Nighthawk Custom and some other 1911 manufacturers say in the manual that Magtech ammo should not be used. Why, for heavan's sake?

I have used Magtech for quite a while in a number of handguns, with nothing other to say than it can be pretty dirty. Wuz up?

I can't speak to the 1911 situation, but I'll add that it is absolutely the worst ammo in the KRISS that I've tried (well, tied with Fiocchi). It seems to work in my SIGs and my G21, but perhaps it's dimensionally different in a very minor way from many other manufacturers?

Also, I read an article online recently that suggested that really tight or finicky guns might suffer from ammo that's a little dirtier than others. Magtech fits into that category, but so does WWB, which seems to work in just about anything, so I dunno...

I have shot 5000+ rounds of 45acp MagTech over the last year in three Kimbers with no problems. In fact I'm always comparing accuracy and reliability from other brands to the MagTech's. I have been able to interchange MagTech, PMC and Winchester White Box.
Now you got me thinking I should try other brands so I don't have to clean my guns as often and help me hit what I'm shooting at........

Couldn't say about the acp... but I got 2 split case mouths out of one box of 454 Casull... my ( more knowledgable ) buddy said he wasn't suprised, as he understood the brass alloy is "harder" & more brittle... so maybe that has something to do with it ???

Why "nix" Magtech? Because it is **** terrible.

Allright, maybe not that bad, but it's REALLY hit or miss as to whether or not my semi-autos like the stuff.

I think WWB is .451cal and Magtech is .452cal. The tighter fit of the latter may be problematic for some guns. I have been shooting magtech bullets [reloads] through my Glock 21SF and other than a big bang and a hole in the black [well hopefully], the bullets seem to shoot straight and true [although you would never be able to tell by how I shot today ... probably shouldn't have shot another 130 rounds today after shooting about the same last night ... gunshot fatigue seems to last at least 24 hours for me].
You could get a new lease on life -- if only you didn't need the first and last month in advance.

I have three (3) S&W M-52s. I got my buddy to finally drop some cash on his first. At 50 feet, 5 shots, 4 in one hole, and one squeaker to 7 o'clock. MagTech ammo is awesome.!

I've only run it through a g19 and g21, mainly because those are the only two I've chosen to shoot lately.

Magtech doesn't seem any dirtier than WWB, in the last 5 boxes of Magtech 9mm I went through.

Can't be as bad as Wolf! At least this ammo comes out of the box clean, where I have had wolf with lacquer all over it right out of the box. Somebody might as well dip it in pine sap. Needless to say I don't give my money to the russians for that stuff.

Anyway, for shooting 200-400 rounds in a session, Magtech doesn't foul the gun any worse than anything else, Blazer, WWB, AE, for me. Guns all get cleaned afterward anyway. $$ is the main factor for target ammo for me, as long as there are no glaring shortcomings on a particular brand. Last Magtech I bought was $9.99 a box for 9mm, picked it up for a decent deal, had no trouble.

if my memory serves me well, didn't/doesn't bill's south sell you magtech when you have to buy there ammo at their demo/manufacturers days? i'm fairly certain that's where i got my sole box of rounds (i have since reloaded from the spent ones) above my reloading bench. it all went bang the first time.
