45-70 with Speer 405 grain projectiles

Postby OldmanFCSA on Fri Apr 01, 2016 4:25 pm

I want to use the same WIN296 powder I use in my 44 Magnum and 357 Magnum. Can anyone provide me data for this loading?

Why don't you roast him. I'm not going to answer his post because I know he is just trolling. So maybe you need to STFU!

6.2 kilograms, but don't forget to back off 10% when starting!

No problem, try rechambering it to .45x105 howitzer first though...

Just filler up with powder, level her off and jam a bootlit on top. Good to go.

This was an actual question from one of my students, not one from this Forum.
He was real adamant that he was only going to buy one powder for all his reloading,

So knowing this, now how would you answer the question.
Please explain in detail how, why, when where, what ever applies = not just a sarcastic response.
This was a "newbee" who had come for training, but was not willing to learn.

Your actual responses please : .............................

Let me know when you want me to post the answer, Oldman. And for the rest of you, as Oldman said - this is a REAL question from a REAL n00b, so what would YOU tell him if that question popped up in here?? That's assuming of course, that anybody in here would care enough to help the n00b out to begin with instead of ignoring him. So, what would YOU say??

OK, I'll answer. It's an interesting question.

1 - Need to know what gun. I would think most lever actions would fail. Ruger No.1 might work though. Not sure about an Encore/Contender.
2 - Don't cry when you blow something up.
3 - Keep a squib rod handy.
4 - Performance will suck more than an Oreck and a Dyson combined.
5 - No, I am not willing to try it with my equipment, or be within 100 feet of anyone while they do.

Try 500 S&W data. It's the biggest cartridge I can think of that has data for H110/296. I have no first hand experience with either cartridge, so I don't know how much larger 45-70 is. If I my magical incantations are correct, the difference in volume is ~0.03 cu in, which sounds like a lot. It's entirely possible it will hang fire (doubt it) or won't ignite at all (probably several times). Make sure you have a new hole on target after every shot.

Start at 34gr. Do not go up more than .5gr at a time.
Someone with Quickload can prove how wrong I am.

Nice try, but no cigar. You're wandering around the outside of the ballpark about a block or two away. Don't need Quickload for this one at all...

Yeah, I have doubts it's even possible to make something work.
I have a feeling that by the time you stuff enough powder in to get reliable ignition, pressure is going to be through the roof.
