jspace wrote:OK, I'll answer. It's an interesting question.
1 - Need to know what gun. I would think most lever actions would fail. Ruger No.1 might work though. Not sure about an Encore/Contender.
2 - Don't cry when you blow something up.
3 - Keep a squib rod handy.
4 - Performance will suck more than an Oreck and a Dyson combined.
5 - No, I am not willing to try it with my equipment, or be within 100 feet of anyone while they do.
Try 500 S&W data. It's the biggest cartridge I can think of that has data for H110/296. I have no first hand experience with either cartridge, so I don't know how much larger 45-70 is. If I my magical incantations are correct, the difference in volume is ~0.03 cu in, which sounds like a lot. It's entirely possible it will hang fire (doubt it) or won't ignite at all (probably several times). Make sure you have a new hole on target after every shot.
Start at 34gr. Do not go up more than .5gr at a time.
Someone with Quickload can prove how wrong I am.

I have a feeling that by the time you stuff enough powder in to get reliable ignition, pressure is going to be through the roof.
