The best way to launch all those projectiles is...

Real answer for a real newb:

"That's not a safe powder choice for that cartridge, you'll need to pick something else." If that didn't convince him, I'd show him a picture of Seismic Sam's hand after losing his finger(s?) in the epic snow blowing incident.

Real answer for this thread:

"What's the point of this thread? Just tell the guy that it isn't a safe choice for that cartridge and that he will need to pick a different powder." If that doesn't work, show him the picture.

Why do you guys need to make reloading so dramatic?

Because in this case, drama apparently WAS required. Apparently the n00b wouldn't listen to Oldman in one of the reloading classes, and was dead set on using 296 for his 357, 44, and 45-70. The real kicker, which I'm sure you know but didn't elucidate, is that 296 is notorious for detonating when used in reduced loads, so if the n00b had used half a case full of 296 he eventually would have blown up ANYTHING but maybe a Ruger #1, and if he had filled up the case with 296 all the way to the bullet he would have blown up even a Ruger #1. As such, this is a real life story of a n00b absolutely set on trying something that was going to get him killed no mater what. At 6'8" and 350 lbs., I can only assume Oldman drop kicked this guy clean across the St. Croix when he was "ejected" from the class in Osceola.

After a stern talking to - he was ejected from the class.

Sam had the right idea on the answers.

Erud also had it right with a simple answer.

Sure wish more members had participated here, rather than sit back and criticize those who did answer.

If you want more answers, why do you want the thread locked before more people can provide them? You only started the thread 19 hours ago, and this isn't exactly a fast moving board to begin with...

I seriously doubt most of that. You are, as usual, inferring all sorts of nonsense that was never stated in the OP. Doug just said that the guy wanted to use 296 for all 3 cartridges. The extra drama about him being "absolutely dead set on trying something that was going to get him killed no matter what" was added by you. I am just guessing here, but common sense tells me that the guy didn't actually go home and kill himself in this way after being told of the dangers. I'm guessing that what more likely happened was that after being ejected from the reloading class at the secret compound (for whatever reason...), he probably thought something like; "well that sucks. I gues I'm going to have to buy another can of powder." New reloaders don't know everything, and sometimes a simple, non-condescending answer is all it takes to steer them in the right direction. Constantly screaming about how everyone is going to be killed just for thinking about an improper loading practice will really irritate the crap out of some people. These are grown adults.

Either I wrote it wrong or you read it wrong. The guy was absolutely dead set on using 296 for all three cartridges, and wasn't listening to reason, so Oldman booted him. There was a fair amount of side talk going on between me and Oldman while this was going on.

I'm sure it was a real nail-biter. Since I didn't see anything on the news about a guy being killed in a horrible reloading accident, are my suspicions correct that he probably changed his mind? Or did your theory that he would rather kill himself than spend the extra $25 on another jug of powder play out?

You guys should call the TV networks and see if one of them will produce a reality show on all of these harrowing reloading experiences you always seem to be having. Come up with a catchy name, maybe something like "Reloading EMERGENCY!!!". One of you could drive around in an ambulance, and the other could follow in a Hearse to deal with all of the fatal noob-explosions that are constantly happening in this area. Heck, I'd watch it.

Just brainstorming here.

In my mind, if someone is so obstinate that he won't listen to the people he has enlisted to teach him about an area that he obviously isn't an expert in( evidenced by the fact that he sought instruction) I would boot him also. I wouldn't want my name or reputation associated with someone so bull headed that they wouldn't listen to those who know better.

My hypothetical example is if I were very experienced in personal hygiene, someone came to me to be schooled in personal hygiene and in the process of that instruction wouldn't accept the fact that trimming your nails with a chainsaw was a bad idea, the instruction would be over - why bother with someone who will not take direction in a setting in which they have clearly sought direction. Its a waste of everyone's time. If the Dude knew so much and was so sure of himself, why bother to talk about it anymore - let him go off and do his own stupid things and hope that he doesn't talk about any time he spent with you "learning".

Not sure what the hub bub is about. You come to me to learn - I give you knowledge - you reject knowledge - I move on to spend my time with people who want to learn - END of STORY.

I am disappointed, I figured somewhere somebody had tried this and Google would prove it. Best I could find.

I answered this as a joke because of who started it and the statement seemed to be attributed to him.

If it was a student, he would be told once that it is dangerous and why. After that, I probably would say something like please leave and if you persist in such BS, on your own head be it. Probably much more profanely, but that's the gist.

I don't tend to get too much into the reloading recipe stuff here because it is so easily available, whether print or online. Simple searches may have to be done, and look past the first page or so for the paying sites.

I think most of the data is a bit on the mild side that is published, but if you exceed that it is up to you to make sure it's safe. After all, each firearm reacts a little differently. This is different, but still. Most likely all you will do is damage your firearm, which is why I don't agree with Sam's histrionics about it, but if that is what entertains him, I am not going to get too worked up over it.
