45-70 with Speer 405 grain projectiles

A place to discuss calibers, ammunition, and reloading

I think the other thing here is that this was a very special situation that I haven't come across before, and this guy wanted to do something where there was NO safe way to do it with 296 and 45-70. ANY load would land you in danger of GBH, and with low loads it would seem that it might be working until the inevitable detonation came along.

And telling him that didn't convince him, eh? He still went home and killed himself anyways?

I remember reading an article by Craig Boddington about a tracker (maybe was a poacher, do not recall) that would empty 2 7.62x39 cases into his .375 H&H and reload a recovered solid on top of that charge quite successfully.

Warning Sam, I do not think he had a manual.

I think he did. Despite the caliber and bullet weight difference, the 7.62 x 39 and 375 H&H have at least 5 powders in common. Whooda thunk it??

Didn't check your manual before posting this, did ya?? Neener, neener, neener....

I'll go (slightly) against the grain on this one.

Is it a doable proposition? Yep.

Would i recommend it for a novice reloader? Nope

H110/296 is a powder well known for sensitivity to excessive airspace in the case. The most logical theory is that it creates a flashover condition igniting the powder column on both ends, creating a pressure spike instead of a curve.

This can be mitigated in a large case by the use of a interior case gas check, and filling to hold it in place. The weight of the gas check and filler needs to be added to the bullet weight for the calculations. Knowing that, you could use 458 Socom data as a baseline, knowing you need to fill the case above the powder column with something to create a mild compression of the powder.

None of this is advisable, as there are better options available on the market.

If TEOTWAWKI happens tomorrow, knowing that its possible could be a valuable tool. In the mean time if the person chooses to develop this, please use a stout action, and a long string for the first couple shots at each charge level. Be uniform on your filling, not judging by eye, but by weighing each polyfill/cereal column, and gas check (wax paper works well) for absolute uniformity.

I've used multiple different kinds of fillers over the years reloading by experimentation, Dacron, wool, felt pads, Cream-o-wheat, others.
Its all experimentation, but in a controlled manner can be achieved. Should a new reloader attempt this - NO.
Dacron filler seemed to work the best but the melted product of combustion smeared itself all over the interior of my rifle's bore and was difficult to properly remove.
I've tried these fillers on straight wall cases and some bottle-necked cases, they work best on straight-walled cases. I don't recommend their use on bottle necked cases due to funnel and compression effects upon combustion.

The shooter/reloader behind my original statement had started his reloading based on U-tube videos and info received from another web-site. Forum members instructed him to use H110 with high-density loadings for 357 & 44 Magnum cartridges. After I had ejected him from my class, I researched the website he said he got his info from. He had presented himself as a seasoned reloader stating he had tried all kinds of powder for his 2 cartridges but wondered which powder would be best for maximum loadings. He then used this data for his Starting loads. Luckily he was shooting Ruger Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk revolvers to contain the pressures of his loadings which were in excess of any reloading manual.

When he started asking questions about rifle cartridge reloading, he was referred to me. I should have done more research on him on
that website before accepting him. He also wanted to load 223/5.56X45 and 308/7.62X51 which we never got to, after dealing with his attitude on the 45-70 cartridge. Have never heard from him again or seen him back on that website where he got his original info. I had posted a warning to those members as to what had happened with their help in loading information. (We are all guilty of it.)

This was also the website where another student tried to steal 10K of primers from me while I was in house. I called Sheriff on him.

Anymore, the only website I accept students from is MN Gun Talk and one other in MN. Everyone here, that has been a student, has been very respectful of my equipment and my supplies, and very honest in any component dealings. Thank you MN Gun Talk members! Many of you have been invited back to use my equipment until you have acquired your own equipment.

Anyway, my posting here was keyed off another persons posting in which we went overboard reacting to his question. I was curious how others would have reacted to this situation. Was it a Troll question - maybe slightly, but a question with a request for honest answers.

Thank you for your input.

You also had the misfortune to post it on April Fool's Day, and I answered in that light. I apologize for my part in distracting from the seriousness of the question, as this has been a useful topic.

Someone needs to get a good reloading manual into the hands of this person, before he seriously injures someone. There Might be some combination of fillers that would result in a reasonably safe load with this powder/cartridge combination, but a newbie is not the person to be conducting the experiment. There are over 150 powders on the market today for a good reason, there are an awful lot of different cartridges that can be reloaded. Slap some sense into this guy before someone gets killed.
