38 S&W

Postby MnHornet on Sat Feb 25, 2017 1:39 pm

Does anybody shoot this anymore?
I was gifted some ammo and found two boxes of 38 S&W.
If anyone could use it, I'd gladly pay it forward.
IM me and we'll try to work something out.

IF ............... no one else wants it, I will take it.

I shoot a Ruger GP100 357Mag with 38's most of the time.
I currently have a Dillon 550 setup to make my 38's.
My daughter loaded 2200 357's for me on this Dillon and left the 38's for my bumbling fingers.

I have a S&W Model 10...that I haven't shot for at least 3 years...probably more.

I have 1 (ONE) loaded round for it (I have no idea how or why the heck there's one round left... Who doesn't finish the box?)

Ok, set me straight. I have never seen nor shot a 38 S&W, but are they not quite different than a .38 Special? As in, different case and projectile? I'm asking because I saw mention of the .357 Mag which has the same case (but longer) as the .38 Spcl?

Note: I'm getting ready to sleep and too lazy to go get one of my manuals off my bench.

If it truly is .38SW and not .38SW special, you do not want to do that.

As I understand it, and I am not a 800 lb reloading troll, but sometimes play one on the interwebs, the .38 sw proceeded the .38 sw special and has a larger diameter bullet that should not chamber in a .38 special or .357 chamber. The .38 special came from lengthening the .38 long colt of San Juan hill infamy. So in your .357 chamber you could shoot .357, .38 special, or .38 long colt, though this last one would be spendy for little performance. The reverse is not true of course.

The Hornady 10th Edition reloading manual does not list a 38 S&W, just the 38 S&W Special.

I will need to check my older reloading manuals for actual data that may differ.

Cartridges of the world lists it. 1877 origination, though it reports it as a .359 lead bullet, thought it had some dimensional differences with .38 colt and special but one might need to dig deeper.

As mentioned, the 38 S&W is different than the 38 S&W Special. The former is of a larger diameter (.360") and will not fit into a 38 Special chamber. It also pre-dated the 38 Special by maybe 2 decades. It is also called the Colt New Police with the only difference being a flat nose bullet rather than a round nose.

The 38 S&W was a common round in the 1890s into the first few decades of the 20th Century. It was often seen in the 5 shot, large frame, break open revolvers exemplified by those made by Iver Johnson, S&W, and the like. There were a number of 6 shot solid frame revolvers chambered for it too. It was the official military round of the British and Commonwealth forces from shortly after World War I through World War II and onward until being replaced by the 9mm Browning P-35. The British loaded it with a 200 gr bullet rather than something in the 150 gr range in their Webley and Enfield revolvers where it was called the 380/200.

I would be interested in it, I have a couple of Enfields that I shoot now and then. I live on the other side of The Cities but do get around to the west side now and again.

As an interesting aside (or not), one can use 38 Super dies to load 38 S&W. At least one can use Lyman dies in such a manner as I have done so successfully. Lyman even labels these dies as being for both.
