9mm subsonic powder coated 147 grain bullets

Postby samginko on Sat Feb 13, 2021 7:27 pm

Anyone using following powders for reloading 147grain lead or powder coated bullets? I will be using federal small pistol primers. This will be for subsonic loads.

Green dot
W231
W296
vihtavuori n110
hodgdon clays
hodgdon universal

Forgot to add, found a jar of trail boss.

Think you should cross the 296 and 110 off your list, for 9mm.

W231 should work. 296 is magnum powder, no good for 9mm

231 is good.

Clays will work, but is very sensitive. Used to be used a lot in USPSA heavy bullet .40 s&w loads, and works, but too many cases let go using it.

Green dot and universal are usable but dirty for this application.

296 and N110 are way too slow for this use.

Thanks for the input. Only loaded 45acp and . 357 (cowboy). I think I will work up the W231 from 3.2 to 3.7.

Seems consistent at 3.2, 3.6, and 3.8. ftf at 3.2 and little pressure signs at 3.8. so 3.6 seems a good choice.

Good for you!

My usual IDPA 9mm load is a 147 ACME coated TCFP cast bullet with 3.0 gr of titegroup. 2.8 functions, but doesn't make power factor for that game in my gun. However, it does not function my PCC. Unfortunately, finding powder is a bit of a chore right now, so what you have is working, and looks pretty accurate.

It is pleasant being able to get more than 2000 rounds for a pound of powder.
