Has anyone used the .30 cal sabots for .224 bullets?

Postby Stradawhovious on Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:35 pm

I have been looking at these for a while, and think it would be fun to give them a shot (every pun intended)

has anyone had any experience with them? http://www.eabco.com/reload02.html

IF as they state you can get a hyper-velocity .224 at 4,200 fps in a 30-06 go for it, you can only miss the barn faster........ :P

Actually, I have not tried anything like that for a rifle. I do use sabots for a rifle barreled shotgun and they work exceptionally well and extend both the range and accuracy of a shotgun to approach many rifles out to 200 yds. Also, the MIL uses sabots for some of their big guns.

Military snipers have used sub caliber sabots - the bullet is tungsten armor piercing:

Never done it myself, but I have seen sabots used on .223's, in a 7.62x25 pistol round, then fired out of a CZ-52...

Now that's almost as cool as a 158gr cheese bullet.

I'll have to get this kit, and give it a try. Worse comes to worse, I'm only out $20.

Surely, you'll want to give your buddy a few of those so he can load them in .308 Win for comparison. ;)

...and you got this information regarding military snipers from where...the wikipedia link does not support this.....

The M948 SLAP (7.62 MM NATO) is used by the M240, M134, and M60, as well as the M903 SLAP (.50 Caliber) that is used by M2HB machine guns. The SLAP is used in combat against current light armored targets. The M903 offers the capability to defeat these targets at ranges two to three times that of currently available ammunition.

It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Remington used to and maybe? loaded "Accelerators" in the various 30 caliber offerings, and for the most part it was a flop......if you want any sense of precision accuracy in the 30 Cal with varmint bullets one might consider looking at the Speer 110gr TNT or 130gr with Varget in the 308 is great! Hornady 110 V-Max, and Nosler 125gr NBT. Sort of more of gimmick, then a consistent way to load ammo....
