Tips for sorting brass?

I'm finally getting into reloading after hoarding my brass for years. I have about 150 pounds of mixed brass, mostly 9mm, .40, .45, .30 carbine, .38 special, 5.56, and 7.62x51. But of course a few oddballs mixed in as well - .380, 7.62x25, 10mm, .400 corbon, etc.

So far, I'm sitting on the couch sorting it a handful at a time into various containers. Is there a better way? I find after a couple hours I start making mistakes, such as .40 in the .45 bucket or 9mm in the .40, and so on. And that's just what I catch myself doing...

I'm not even to the point of weeding through large vs small .45ACP primers, some brass is likely berdan primed, etc. My goal right now is merely to separate by caliber with near 100% accuracy.

Tips? Cheap gadgets to help with this chore?

Thanks,

Bitter Bastard

This might give you a good start once you get it down to a pile of pistol auto-loader brass https://www.amazon.com/Shell-Sorter-380 ... B00BFN5TTI. They also have a 380 add-on plate from what I recall.

If you are near Edina, I have the brass sorting set including the .380 sorter, and you are welcome to borrow them.

I'm in Nebraska at the moment (50 BMG Match) but will be home late Monday evening.

Send me a PM if you want to borrow the sorting tray set.

Thanks much for the information, and especially the offer BigDog58. I'll definitely add those to my Amazon wish list but for now I guess I'll continue sorting by hand. It isn't too bad if I just do a couple hours a night, I'm almost done.

Here's a cheap tip that I use when sorting pistol brass. It helps catch those dang 380s. I use a .40 tray.

I saw this deal last night and have a set of brass sorting trays on the way for $33 shipped. I'll add the .380 later when I find it on sale.

Thanks for the tip, now there are 4 sets left. I tried that trick to add a Free shipping item to reduce shipping charge but looks like you now have to buy $30 worth to get free shipping.

I got my shell sorters from Midway and all I can say is "wow!" So fast and easy to use, sorting hundreds of cases in minutes. Well worth the $33, that's for sure. Thanks for the tip!
