Where can I get 10mm?

Postby RyanTV on Sat Jan 23, 2010 7:03 pm

Does anyone know where I can get factory ball 10mm ammo?? I can not seem to find any at Capra's, Bills Gun Shop and Range, Gander Mountain or Cabelas.

Ar eyou looking for blasting ammo or other purposes? 10mm isn't high on the production list for the big MFGs right now.... Frontiersman in SLP would be worth a call. I was in there yesterday and they had piles of blasting ammo.... Not sure bout 10mm though.

I am looking for 10mm blasting ammo. It seems as if it is the hardest to get of all some what standard ammo out there.

It sounds like reloading 10mm should be on your to-do list.

From what I have been hearing reloading seems like the best way to get 10mm. Thanks

Time to drop the $$$ on a Dillon 550, or a 650xl if you also want to do bottle neck cased cartridges...

I haven't stopped there in a while, but Prince Gun Shop heading up 169 has had some American Eagle the last couple times I've stopped...

Some people don't like the aluminum cased stuff and Bill's won't let you shoot it at their range but I like the stuff. Never had a problem with it, feeds and shoots every time. Just go to Burnsville and you'll be just fine.

I have had some firearms that wouldn't cycle the aluminum cased stuff..... FWIW.

Yes, 10mm is about as good a reason to get into handloading as you will get. As far as "blasting ammo", be aware that specifically in 10mm, there is "blasting ammo" and then there is "BLASTING AMMO!!!!" Some 10mm ammo is watered down crap that can be running no more than 50 FPS faster than 40 S&W loads, and the stuff from Corbon and Doubletap is TRUE 10mm ammo that can be over 300 FPS fater than 40 Short & Weak loads. The original design spec for the 40 S&W was a 180 grain bullet @ 980 FPS. With a max 10mm load, you can get that 180 grain bullet going 1300 FPS.

And I will repeat what I have said many times before: Getting straight into reloading with a progressive press is adding extra danger to your learning curve. When you load ammo with a single station press or a turret press, you do EACH step manually, and keep repeating the process until it becomes ingrained in your head and you know the whole process backwards and forwards. With a progressive press, you will have NOT intimately learned the process before you start cranking out hundreds of rounds quickly, and you simply CANNOT watch all 4 or 5 stations at once. With hot 10mm loads, you do NOT want to mess up!!

You can start out with a Lee manual for $25, get a single station press for FREE with the manual, and then get the Lee dies, Lee powder measure, beam scale, digital vernier caliper, Lee Autoprimer, a Speer #14 manual (which you need to read cover to cover BEFORE you touch anything else!!!), and you're in business. Then you need a can of Blue Dot powder, bullets, NEW cases, and large pistol primers, and you're in business.

Costwise, 10mm bullets are going for about 20 cents each, and with the primer and powder you're probably looking at 25 cents per round for REAL 10mm blasting ammo. That's $12.50 for a box of ammo, which is less than HALF of what you would pay for watered down crap IF you could even find it, and don't forget the added cost of gas money trying to find factory ammo. You load 15 boxes of ammo, and your reloading stuff is pretty much paid for. IF you become a 10mmaholic, THEN you can start thinking about a Dillon, MAYBE. I've been reloading for 38 years, and I will never go beyond a 6 station Lyman turret press, and I think I've got FIVE 10mm's in my gun safe.

Just remember, however:

I sort of "backed into" 10mm. I have been reloading 40's so the extra cost to get into 10's was minimal. (Same dies....) Of course I had to buy the gun, but since I could reload I figured why not?

I like your logic. It's kind of like when I find some random brass on the range and I don't have a gun that it fits.... yet. ;)

Seriously.. from what I've heard from manufacturers, by this summer I expect to see shelves stocked back up.

I keep finding .45 ACP brass at the range. Haven't gotten into that yet. Too many choices.

I have shot the alum ammo in my witness 10mm and never had a problem with it, its the cheeper ammo out but Ive been told you shouldnt reload it. So I only shoot the brass for the cases to reload. I also have the 9mm conversion for this gun and with the large frame it is just one sweet shooting pistol.
