What lube do you prefer for larger cases?

Postby Stradawhovious on Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:33 am

I have just started reloading my first "large" cased caliber, (.45-70 gvt) and have found that my traditional lube and methods fall short. I'm curious as to what you folks that feel the need to compensate with larger cases ( :P )are using for lube.

If you're using Lee dies, Lee Case Sizing Lube... Very cheap.

RCBS also says to not use wax based lube:

Called RCBS again yesterday, and sent them an e-mail regarding the stuck .223. Explained that out of the thousands of rifle rounds I've loaded, the ONLY stuck cases I've had have been as of very recent--when I decided to give Imperial a try.

Here is the response from RCBS--

Quote:
Hi Jeff:
Return the die to us and we will remove the stuck case and replace any
damaged components. You want to avoid lube that is wax based or has any
wax products in the ingredients. 95% of the stuck cases we get back
here are due to wax based lube.

What happens is that the wax builds up inside the die and is like rubber
cement in there and the cases will get stuck every time. Your die is
under warranty and there is no problem sending it back to us. Have a
great day!
I know and fully expect to hear the "it's never happened to ME" responses, and trust me, I'm GLAD it's never happened to you! Really! Anyone and everyone that has had a TRULY stuck case--as in, TNT, C4 and volcanic heat won't get that sucker out--knows the maddening frustration.

But in all the years I've been reloading, the Lee lube has never even given the hint of having a case wanting to stick.

I broke one of my cardinal rules--if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

RCBS (if they really said that) has an axe to grind. Redding owns Imperial Sizing Wax.

Lee and RCBS lube work, but they have a nasty sticky feeling texture that I do not like. Any lube can build up in your dies if you don't keep them clean.

I've loaded .45-90 and .45-70 ... all with Hornady One Shot ... no problem! Image

I have a letter from Bill at Lee Precision I could scan that says only to use Lee lube with Lee dies. I'm guessing RCBS only recommends their products. I was using Hornady One Shot and it didn't cut it at all...

I use Hornaday One Shot on everything. I have never had a problem I even load my 45-70 on my Dillon.

Ive tried One-shot on several things in the past (including the 45-70 last night) and I would have had better luck using glue in every situation.

I can't stand that stuff.

I will give the Imperial wax a try...... I've been looking for an excuse to head over to the GunStop anyways.

I actually like one shot, but it unfortunately doesn't work well on everything. It should be fine for strait wall cases like .45-70... I think it would be kinda hard to get a strait wall case like a .38/.357Mag/.45 Colt/.45-70/etc stuck in a die, but that's just my opinion.
