Moving my reloading room, need help.

Postby stesch_s10 on Mon Sep 12, 2011 3:29 am

I will be moving to a town home at the end of the month. Currently my reloading room is in the garage. The new townhome won't have enough room in the garage to do that. SO the secondary bedroom is going to be the storage/reloading room.

My question is, the bedroom has carpet. I WILL NOT reload over carpet for the fear of losing primers, the collecting of brass shavings and don't want to get the carpet dirty. Since it's a rental townhome, I won't be able to just rip the carpet up. What can I do to make it a hard surface for the 1 year we are staying there. And after a year we can remove whatever is on top of the carpet and the carpet won't be damaged or moldy or anything like that?

I was thinking like a vinyl flooring sheet. I can deal with the "squishy" feeling. I've read I might be able to put plywood used for cupboards with the smooth side and that will make a half sturdy surface. OR do I just get a few big computer chair mats to walk on?

I'd go for the computer chairmats...

Put down a couple sheets of cheap plywood. Run a couple screws down into the floor to hold them from moving.

pulling the carpet back is no big deal either if its held down with tack strips, its just an easy job to restretch after......or get a good drop cloth and cover the carpet

I worried the same thing about carpet and reloading. Moved into a new house, and the area I have for reloading is, you guessed, carpet.
Decided I'd give it a go...two years later, it's really no problem reloading on carpet. It's not dirty, and the occasional dropped primer has not been an issue.
Just sayin'.

so what do you do for brass trimming? Everytime I trim the shavings go flying. Ever spill any powder? I happen to be a guy who has that happen every once and awhile.

I went to Menards ... got one of them thick plastic sheets (drop cloth?) ... cut it to size ... and laid a giant area rug over it (6ft x 8ft ... like $40).

I 'spose if ya spill a lot, ya could jest get a vynil flooring remnant, instead?

a dust buster is the greatest thing ever for spilled powder on any surface. AWESOME investment...

i'd jsut put a drop cloth under the tabel while you're working to catch any spent primers or whatever.

you COULD do your brass trimming in the garage... all else inside. seems aproachable... ???

The above mats also come in a dark gray/black.

I be a little cautious about sucking up powder into an electric vacuum cleaner.

I got some of those mats that piece together, AKA weight room mats or whatever for my dogs kennel. The only problem I see with those is they would come apart after walking on them enough... i would think.

If you're sure about the configuration, you can glue them together. What we did for the kids, so they would stop disassembling them.

I also reload in a room with carpet. I have no issues, case trimmer shavings fall into an old rectangle cookie sheet as does everything around the scale and reloading press. (Dillon 650)

I trim brass with a hand cranked trimmer, so the shavings don't travel too far, I sweep them off the bench and into the trash. I do spill a little (few flakes) of powder now and then. I have to say that I vacuum them up whenever I vacuum the floor.
We're not talking pounds or ounces here, haven't had an issue yet.
Does anyone actually know if a vacuum has ignited powder? For real?

I have carpet in my reloading room too and it hasn't been a problem at all.
